Sgt. hurt again..update 8/31
Hi Traci and everyone, it's been a really long time since I've been on. Hope you are well.
Sgt., my West German Shepard was diagnosed last year with the worst case of hip displasia the vet said he has ever seen and wasn't sure how the dog even walks. Sgt. is the lowest on the totem poll and is a big baby when it comes to pain so if he's in pain I know about it and he doesn't fuss most of the time. Vet just can't believe what he sees though, that dog has not bone to go into the hip socket, not sure how he does it but he does. Of course I stopped both dogs from playing by themselves when we found out that Sgt. hips were bad and of course rough play with Max(other GSD) isn't helpful. So they get play time suppervised since then.
Sgt and max were on an extended boarding stay and like last year we knew sgt.'s hips would get bad during the stay because he likes to jump(not even sure how he does that but he does). The kennel are trusted by us and have watched the dogs for several years now. They are former shepard breeders as well and know the breed. I got a call Monday to tell me that from one day to the next sgt was deteriorating, he woldn't eat or drink(he isn't a big drinker to begin with). His elbow was swollen and his hips of course were weak. The woman was up all night with him watching over him and hand feeding him water.
She started him on antibiotics and another med I have for him short term for the pain but I can't remember what it's called.
I called the vet and they suggested ice cubes instead of water and if I couldn't get him to do that to bring him in and they would let me put a drip in him and stay with him. He loved the ice cubes, I mean loved them. Being home I could keep him confined to one place. His elbow was still swollen which they said to ice it and not allow him to move it. So I carried him place to place, gave him ice cubes, hand fed him and did what any owner would for their baby. Vet said give it a few days and we'll see about the elbow.
The elbow is doing better, it did have some adema but that is clearing up. We think due to his hips, he landed on his elbow and hurt it. He is due to go to vet for an xray. I needed to get him hydrated first and it has worked well so far. He is using the leg that the elbow was hurt but I don't want him to so am still picking him up. His back legs are doing better as well.
I think he likes it when I pick him up. Hubby says I have to see the look on his face when I do it, the dogs face is priceless.
Sgt. isn't one of those huge german shep's, my dogs are thin so therefore aren't 120 lbs like I see most american shepard breeds. I'm grateful for that because I wouldn't be able to lift him.
Just thought I'd update here, have a great day.

Hi mamabear,
How old is Sgt, and did he previously have an FHO, like when he was younger?
Are you in the financial position to consider a total hip replacement? (if Sgt is in otherwise good health, and is a good candidate, and if you can afford).
Otherwise, I'm afraid that the majority of non-surgical treatments would only be temporary, and there are risks with NSAIDS or steroid use (although there are other things like supplements but without a lot of cartilage, they might not be of any benefit) - pain control is crucial of course, specific exercise (or walks), etc, but when pain is so evident, the exercise is very difficult to initiate and keep consistent. Hydrotherapy might be an option, but again, may only be for temporary effects.
Has your vet ever consulted with an orthopedic surgeon for options specific to Sgt's needs? If not, might be a good idea to do so.
You also want to rule out other things going on as well....granted, the anorexia, reluctancy to move about, etc could be related to pain but you want to make sure nothing else is occuring as well, so maybe bloodwork should be done to monitor vital organ function.
Please talk to your vet in more depth, it's awful seeing your baby in pain and not being able to enjoy normal or even limited activity. I sure hope you can come up with something.

Re: Sgt. hurt again..
ok this is 3rd time I'm going to try to get this out here. I keep having to stop then I dont save it.
Sgt was doing better so I didn't take him to vet. today though he is going to go to vet. he started favoring it again really bad yesterday.
He has never had surgery at all, he has never been under sedation at all. he's almost 10 years old, teeth are beautiful and he is healthy except for the poor hips. His hips has been bad since about two yrs old and the vets we were seeing didn't think to xray him, they just said well he doesn't want to jummp anymore so what. Stupidly since sgt showed no signs then of pain I didn't think to get him xrayed. He started getting bad last year then really bad in the summer. thats when the xray showed he was so horrible at that point.
I have a bad feeling his leg is also arthritis, I'm hoping for something simple like a pulled ligament or something we can splint at the dr's office. I dont mind the picking him up if I must, he's my baby.
We would not put him through the surgery for a complete hip replacement. The amount of money it cost is a lot. I have been through nuts and bolts with our Newfie when he was a puppy and it was a lot to take care of him, that I wouldn't mind but the amount of money they want for a full hip replacement is just robbery.
I am going in this afternoon for open appt's(you can just walk in). I will update after we get home.

Re: Sgt. hurt again..
The xray shows a very aggressive cancer. Since he didn't have any issues prior to this the dr says that it's aggressive and it will hit his lungs next. I opted out of getting his lungs xrayed because I know the only solution to this is euthanasia. I have him home right now comfortable and we will see about when we should do this.
The dr. did say that amputation would be an option if sgt's back legs were ok but they are horrible too so this is just a matter of when should I take him back to put him down. I knew this would be the outcome and I thought maybe since he was using it there might be a chance I was wrong but he's only using it to please me.
I know I must and I'm ok with that but my heart is so hurt and my kids will be devestated. My 6 yr old doesn't get what putting down means so I am not giong to be able to tell her the truth and that kills me too. If the vet lets me euthanize at home I would prefer that, we'll see what happens.
I am not sure what impact it will be to Max either(other dog we have who is 1yr older than Sgt). I mean do I allow max to see Sgt after he has been put down? We will bury sgt on our property when the time comes.
i dont even know what else to think right now, i'm so sad.

Re: Sgt. hurt again..
I am having a moment... I can not stop being upset. I do not want to put him down, I just don't. Yes it's selfish, I know. My heart hurts because he is not going to make it.
He is one of my protectors, he saw me through two of my pregnancies and between him and my other gsd I was the best protected woman in the world. I can't look at where he sleeps without getting upset.
..sorry just having a moment...

Re: Sgt. hurt again..
Today Sgt did get up for me to go potty, he peed a lot. I have left his cage open so he can drink when he wants even at night. He wont rest outside of his cage unless it is my the chair with me and only for a short time. We cage trained them as pups so his cage is comforting to him.
He has refused to eat for me, his breathing is though his heart working hard. I am giong to try to get him to take some ham with his pill so at least he can still have his medicine. I am at a loss for words and so upset at how fast this is going.

Re: Sgt. hurt again..update 8/31
Sgt. is no longer suffering. He never gave me a fuss, he was one of my protectors.
I took him to the Vet, walked in during walk in hours and they saw me right away. The girl knew just by the look on my face. I put Sgt. in the bed of the truck in half of his cage. The Vet was so sweet and let me keep him there so we didn't have to move him. The Vet Tech couldn't find a good angle to get in there since I was already inside with Sgt. so the vet let me roll the vein for him. He said looks like you know more than most so go ahead. Sgt didn't fuss at all, not that I thought he would.
He peed all over himself last night and this morning, i got him outside this morning but it was just a mess, it was just so humiliating for him. The poor thing.
he is in a better place right now. You wuoldn't think so by my 6 year olds reaction. She hasn't stopped crying for 30 minutes. I finally got her to calm down enough and take a few deep breathes. She wanted to see him and hug him and kiss him.
The kids didn't know I put him down, they think he died while we were in the other room. I think God will forgive me that lie.

Mamabear, I'm so sorry I wasn't here this week, but I had a feeling it was not going to be good news. I probably would have suggested seeing a more experienced vet (orthopedic), to be sure, but it may not have changed the outcome.
Even if it wasn't cancer, from your posts, it was obvious that something was progressing, and the pain aspect would have been difficult to manage long term. I believe you did what was best, and I believe that Sgt knew you did the very best you could for him. I know how very much you're hurting, and I hope you can feel some sense of peace in knowing you did the right thing, as heart-breaking as it is.
I also think you did fine with the kids, you are the only one who knows them best and know what they can and cannot handle. When they are so young, it is so difficult to choose the right words, the right time.
I'm crying right beside you, I know this is so painful for you, and it breaks my heart that you're going through this. Please know you're not alone, I'm keeping sweet Sgt in my thoughts and prayers and sending many many ((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))) for you.
Safe and gentle journey, sweet Sgt, you will be so missed

mamabear, I am so sorry. I know and understand your pain. Please try to remember him in happy times, not painful ones. He will be with you in your heart forever.
