Doggie Wheelchair Carts

Post by Tambrey »

There is a story sharing on facebook (ad I cannot find it anywhere else yet)

There is a man i Texas, Jerry West, who makes and donates wheelchair carts for dogs in need...he is sharing his plans for free so others around the country can also make and donate the easy to make PVC carts...

He has made any for GSD with hip issues, and down to itty bitty size for the little ones who need wheels.

He is working on pictures etc to put on his FB page, with instructions...but hopefully he will make them available elsewhere for others who do not FB

but..if you DO Facebook....here is his page

I live in Ft. Worth, Texas and I build and donate these dog wheelchairs. I got into this when my dog became paralyzed from cancer a little over a year ago then I started donating them to anyone who needed them. I then adopted one of my clients who is a 6 month old GSD born with birth defect that does not allow her to walk on her own. So now I have two dogs in chair and would like to
spread some of the things I've learned. What I'm looking to do is to teach people that are interested in learning how to build them so they can donate them to needy animals. I just sent one to a rescue in California this week and it really got me to thinking that other people (especially those involved in rescue) should know how to do this. These chairs can mean the difference in getting a dog adopted that has special needs and money could possibly be spent in other areas besides purchasing a expensive wheelchair. I build and donate these and I'm not rich enough to provide everyone who needs one so if i can get people around the country involved we can help a bunch of dogs without going broke. If you have any mechanically inclined people in your group and they have interest contact me whenever you can. I have a good solid design but people can see different things and working together we could one fine little product.

Thanks
Jerry West

I'm also gonna build a small cart today for a 10-15lb pound dog and show everyone how easy it is for the little ones. I didn't make any plans for the small one because they are carrying so little weight not much thought needed. The pvc is more than strong enough and the only people that will tell you otherwise is someone trying to sell you something. A little explanation of the little one and I really think anyone could do it. If you still can't what about a neighbor, co-worker, brother, sister or someone. Once you tell people what your trying to accomplish someone will be interested and be willing to help you. I will try and provide all the support to as many people as i can.
and one more about purchasing his supplies
Quick story about people willing to help. I went into a Home depot and bought all my supplies and had about $75 worth of pvc and other supplies. The cashier said "Looks like you have a lot of work to do" I'm sure she assumed I had plumbing to do. I told her not really the stuff was for making dog wheelchairs and I showed her some pics. She asked how much I sold them for and I told her I didn't, so of course she said "What do you mean" I told her I donate them. She then rung up my stuff and my bill was $1.78. She said "this is on me" and to come see her everytime. Brought tears to my eyes that someone I've never laid eyes on was willing to help. Someone is willing to help you I guarantee it.
He posted a flikr link with pictures and an exploded diagram of the chair basics
