Question about cracked nail

Post by oconnorjoy »

Buddy (my sheltie) has cracked one of his nails near the base. It bled a lot but stopped after I applied Quick blook stopper. He has a vet appointment in an hour. Is there anything else I need to do as far as cleaning it? He's walking but limps. I'm trying to keep him quiet so it doesn't start bleeding again.

By now, you're probably already back from the vet.

But, no, as long as you've stopped the bleeding, and are getting to the vet promptly, there's not much else you can do. In the event he has long nails, keep them trimmed more often, and check the environment outside, like concrete under a kennel or fence, etc.

Buddy did well at the vets. He trimmed it down, put cream on it and gave him an antibiotic shot. The vet had my hubby holding him while he trimmed the nail and warned him that it would hurt. Buddy didn't even flinch....the vet thought he was such a good boy. I keep his nails trimmed every 6 weeks...I guess I'll have to do it every 4 week.

Good to know all is well, and that Buddy was an excellent patient!

Just check his nails more frequently, when they are too long or start curling, you know it's time to trim.

Do you know what he was doing directly before the nail ripped? Did he get it caught on something or played too rough outside or something? If you can determine that, try to take steps to avoid whatever he may have caught it on.
