As Traci said...it depends on your cats....when we moved from Tucson to Iowa back in 1989....we only had ONE cat and 2 dogs at the time...we did get a tranquilizer for the cat, but never managed to get one down his throat...however...he traveled fine in the moving van with my SO at the time...Tigger just stretched out on the front dash and enjoyed the scenery...of course, NOW I know better and would have him crated for his own safety...but back then, people did not seem to know better...or whatever...

We also had him leash trained so when we stopped, he got out for a walk...

As for the dogs, we built a custom crate in the back of our pickup truck that my brother came out (flew) to help me drive back with...they got half of the back of the truck, and again, when we stopped, they got out to run (on leashes)...

There are motels along the way that accept pets....if you feel better driving, you could stop at pet friendly hotels each night and let them out to stretch...even if only in the bathroom in case they DO decide to NOT use a litterbox with the stress of it all....

Do you think that it matters what time of day we fly? In the morning vs. overnight. I am wondering if an overnight flight would stress them more because they are nocturnal. However, they seem to sleep all night now anyway....?
