Dogs out again!!

Post by JUDY S »

I am stressed! Last week my girls got out of the fence but kind neighbors notified me right away and we got them back. They had dug themselves out. So we put the electric fencer up again. :( Usually it just has to be there and they will stay away from the fence, so after a day we turned it off. This morning I got another call, they had been out for 15 minutes! The lady who saw them didn't have my number. My husband and I looked for over an hour and they could not be found. I am scared. I know they will come home, but what if someone hurts them or they get run over. I am praying they come home soon. I don't see that we have any choice but to keep the fencer on from now on. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

If they are always digging their way out...is it possible to dig a trench and put concrete in to fill and keep them from digging?....or if not concrete....railroad ties or cinder blocks?

Ours have been getting out lately as well, twice in 2 days...fortunately they do stay on our acreage, but I still do not like them running loose...

After 3 1/2 hours I found them! My day just got so much brighter.

Tambrey we have considered the trench idea, but it would be so much work! It's a huge fence, part of it in some natural bushes with tree roots to work around. My husband informed me a couple days ago that me and my animals can be overwhelming. I confess that hurt, but it also makes me not want to ask for any more work for my kids. I don't know what I will do.

You have an electric fence? If you do and paid for it to be put up then why not use it if it does work?

I would keep those collars on those dogs OR crate them in the house or just keep them in the house ifyou dont want to crate them. You were very lucky last time and this time and might not be too lucky next time.

I would be upset if i was looking for dogs as well ,when they do fine on the collar. Dont turn the collar's off just use them and MAKE SURE you keep up with the batteries.

I'm with Tambrey, dig the trench and poor concrete....rent a backhoe if necessary, it's fast work with a backhoe. Concrete is relatively cheap, and your dogs are worth more than concrete or expenses you may pay due to injuries requiring treatment if they were hit by a car or...

It's not the collar electric fence, just an old fashion yellow electric wire. They just hear the clicking of it being on and they stay far away from the wire, thus staying away from the fence and the temptation of going under. It will remain on for the rest of the summer.

I went for a massage yesterday on the other side of town, small town, and my massage lady said the girls had been at her house!! They have never wandered that far before.

Traci, the backhoe would work as my father has two, but what a mess on the yard. We have planted trees along two of the sides of the fence and the third side has natural trees. The hoe wouldn't fit. No way would my husband go for that. It would have to be done by hand.

Then how about a rotatiller, done pretty deep, then pour concrete.

That sounds good too, Traci. I`ve had people put large patio stones under the fence and they can`t dig, and it eases up on pruning and mowing the fenced area. And what is wrong with leaving the fencer on? I have sheep, and the fencer never goes off - to keep the dogs and sheep apart from each other.

Yep if you arent going to pour the concrete then keep collars on. It will keep them safe AND keep dh from getting angry.
