I live on a farm, so the sheep manure offers good breeding for flies. My dogs can get bleeding ears and muzzle when it is warm and humid, and the flies are hungry. The Swat works for them. These are not horse flies. Recently we have a drought, so the flies are looking for moisture too. And the bees, and the birds, so it continues to be a problem with the flies. I collect dead flies in the pail of dog manure, by sprinkling fly pellets into the pail.

We have black flies, the New Englanders call them May flies plus we have deer flies. They did a number on my Lennie’s ears. I use the Off Skintastic and put a little bit on the ears. That keeps them away. The black flies were so bad they were crawling in Caroline’s eyes. Yuck. That’s when I know its time to cut the walk short.

My boyfriends Samoyed often gets his ears eaten away by flies. They used SWAT but I don't think they have anymore. I know I've heard Vasoline works to keep the flies off of the tips of the ears but I don't know if it's safe and he hasn't tried it. The Siberian Husky he has has small bites on her ears but not as bad as the Samoyed. Often my dog, when I walk her and we're outside I'll notice on hot days the flies are horrible and swarm her ears.

If you can`t get swat, you can use vaseline, but vicks works better. use lots, and often. Don`t leave the ears to the flies. Get them protected.

I wouldn't use Vicks on any pet, since it is menthol, may contain eucalyptus, and is particularly toxic to cats!
