Another Ecoli question...

Post by Marty »

Someone elsewhere mentioned we could eliminate the bacteria by homecooking meat and veggies, leaving out the grains because ecoli thrives on grain. I wonder how plausible this is...she said her dog had nasty ear infections caused by ecoli and it worked for him. I know this board doesn't recommend this normally....

Ear infections and urinary tract infections are two completely different things. The source and activity of the bacteria is also different.

So, this person suggests that an e-coli infection will be "cured" with simply giving cooked meat and vegetables? That's a new one on me  I suspect either this person had previous antibiotcs given, the dog was incorrectly diagnosed, or never had a culture done to confirm, and if e-coli wasn't present, then the condition resolved on it's own (tincture of time).

E.coli lives on virtually everything, but grains would not be it's first choice. It is an organism that has evolved to live in the intestinal tract of most animals. With grains, I would think more of molds rather than bacteria as serious concerns. Diet can have a definiate effect on the immune system, but I know of no direct correlation between what you eat and what type of infection you would be susceptible to (except, of course with food that is contaminated with an intestinal infectant, like Salmonella). You can elimate bacteria in the foods that are eaten by cooking them, but I also know of no correlation between removal of bacteria from food and ear infections. (Intestinal infection, most definitely, but not ears).

Thank you, I knew I could count on you both for input.

Not wanting to play around with her health at this age, I will stick with what we are doing, and Vet recommended. I couldn't live with myself otherwise.
