Cat paw movement question

Stupid question, but what does it mean when a cat comes on your lap and pushes his paws into you like he is kneeding dough? Max will come and lay on my lap, but before he does, he steps up and down on me. He is usually purring while he does it, so it must be some sort of a sign of affeciton.

You answered your own question It is kneading, as they did with their mother when they were nursing, it is a sign of contentment.
