got a question for anyone who thinks theymight understand

Post by davet »

a dogs mind...Today Sassy was in a deep funk, just sulking around...took her for a ride and nothing..then all of a sudden she perked up and got real excited..
within a few minutes my daughter and her husband who used to have her...theywere about 5 or so miles when she perked..then about 100 years ago i was going to Bucknell Univ. and used to drive home between semesters and home was Ft. Lauderdal,Fla. about 800 plus miles.my parents would tell me when i got about to the outskirts of Lauderdale the three dogs (toy poodles) would want out of the house..they would run up to the corner and sit and wait. when my car came in sight they would jump around, i'd let them in the car with the usuall greetings etc...question...how the heck do dogs know these things..i didn't come home at the same time of the year nor any particular pattern.???...they must got something we hain't

I actually saw a tv show on this once years ago... on 60 minutes or something. They had a "monitor" at the person's house with the dog and a monitor with the person who was taken far away in a car. Then the monitor who was with the person would suddently say - ok- it's time to go home...and they would start to drive to the person's home. Each time was different and unknown to the person, but each time the dog would react and go to the window when the person was on the way home. It worked everytime.
I don't know, davet, doggie esp? You tell me...what do you think??

have no idea...i used to see in the office all the time, my surgical patients would sit in the cage after they recovered and i would send them home in the aft. or evening. but i ccould always tell that their owners were either on Township line (my office rd) or near by cause they would start to get excited...i could understand if the owners were out front cause the pups would recognize the whine of the motor....but when they were a mile or so away......beats me

when hubby or I are out the dogs both start to go a little stir crazy - barking at nothing, running to the windows, etc..but this doesn't happen until we are very close to home. My husband knows as do I that when the dogs start acting like that, either he or I are close by and on our way home :D Not sure how they know - some type of instinct I guess...or perhaps they know the sound of our cars from a long ways away? Who knows..its certainly a real thing though!

I used to babysit for two kids with a huge GSD. The dog ALWAYS knew when the parents were coming home. He would get up about 10 minutes before they arrived and go sit in front of the door. At first we thought he could hear their car on one of the major roads that ran behind our subdivision (you could see it from their house - but the entrance to our subdivision wasn't off that road - they had to actually travel about 3-4 more miles to get home. Then we discoverd he did it even if they didn't travel anywhere near that road and came home from the opposite direction. Either ESP or exceptional hearing! None of my dogs has ever shown that talent.

I'm a little less impressed, because I have seen them become excited and act like someone was coming home, when they weren't.

would ignore evry car or client until the owners car showed up...this of course does not count when kids would hop into the cage room and then the dogs would get excited...otherwise they would just lay there and look sad
