puppy teeth question please

Post by kimkats000 »

My dog has all of his adult teeth in now. His lower canines are about half their adult size yet. My question is this-do I need to worry that his baby canines are still in? They are not loose nor do they seem to be painful. At what point to I worry? Do I let nature take its course? THANKS! Kim

With my dinky toy dogs that almost always retain their puppy teeth, we pull them at 6 months when they are under to be spayed/neutered. Leaving them in can result in misplaced teeth and difficulty eating. How old is he? If he's a young boy, then waiting and watching is fine. Have your vet take a peak if they don't seem to be coming out by 6-7 months when its time for his neuter.

Not sure about the puppy teeth, but we have a cat who did not lose his kitten fangs...he ended up with three sets of double fangs and one set of triple fangs in his mouth...he was still young, but having sinus and sneezing problems...the vet did not want to pull yet, but encouraged us to get tuggy toys and get him tog rab ahold and play tiggues with us...he did lose four fangs, and got down to three regular ones, and a set of doubles (which had been the triple set)...

When he was neutered, the vet did take one of the fangs as they were upper and giving him alot of sinus problems...unfortunately, this cat still has sinus issues and sneezing because the roots of his fangs go way into the sinus cavity...

Oh I'm glad I ran into this. My 5 month old Basil's puppy teeth was loose and she ended up swallowing them. I just thought this will happen with all the rest of her teeth. How do I know when I should bring her in to get the rest of her teeth pulled?

Well darn! He is alreay "fixed". I did not see the "big" teeth coming in when I took him in and they did not say anything about them. They did an all over look and found that he had a slight ear infection that we have treated. I really think they would have noticed the double teeth. Hummmm It is the lower teeth. Do you think I need to have them pulled? My older dog is going through some eye problems that are quite costly so money is a little tight. Otherwise it would not really be an issue. If the vets here say pull I will do so. Kim

Only your vet can determine this by a full oral exam, looking at the placement of the teeth, and looking for problems that may affect the other teeth.

Call your vet and make an appointment, you should only have to pay an exam fee.
