hi everyone; i was wondering if somone could help me out - my cat is approx. 1 year old now and ever since i got her i've had problems with bouts of diarehha and throwing up - i initally thought it was due to certain kinds of foods, mainly soft food so i cut it out of her diet and have only been feeding her hard food now for three months - but still something seems to be wrong unless it's normal for some cats to be this way - i'm not sure?
She has soft poo about once every few weeks - she goes around wiping her bottom on the floors and rugs (not a great thing to have to deal with ) - she throws up sometimes as well - at first it was just hairballs but for the past month now i've noticed it's more than that - i found liquid on the floors (a yellowish color and once it was clear) - it was beside her food - also sometimes i've noticed its a thicker liquid with chewed up food bits in it i would assume from the lumpy texture - she's been throwing up at least once a week now - other than these problems she seems perfectly fine
I'd appreciate any feedback (i can't afford expensive food or heafty vet bills)

My cat throws-up & has bouts of diarehha
Re: My cat throws-up & has bouts of diarehha
not sure if it's the same, but my kitten had similar problems for the first few months of her life. the throwing up, soft stools, scooting her poopy butt, and she even had blood in her stools. she didn't get better until the vet treated her for intestinal parasites. had to treat her twice. she does much better now. she's also on a special diet for her gastrointestinal problems.
you really need to get you cat to a vet. even if she seems normal (josie did too) . . . it's not normal for cats to do this all the time. something is definitely wrong.

might be that the vet will allow you to bring in a stool sample for a =looksee.....can[t hurt to ask
Re: My cat throws-up & has bouts of diarehha
oh yes, yes, that's a good idea! i remember taking in stool samples every other day for two weeks . . . just make sure it's pretty fresh. i think they told me no longer than 8 hours. you might want to ask when you call though. and it doesn't matter if it's covered with litter.

Hi Christa; Thanks for the reply - i haven't noticed blood in her stools at all - may i ask 'do you recall whether the soft stools where constant or just once in awhile? What kind of treatment did the vet give her?
Davet/Christa; What's the benefit of bringin the vet stool samples? - you mean before the vet examines her? Questions - questions

Re: My cat throws-up & has bouts of diarehha
Hi Melanie,
The vet checks the stools for eggs (ova) and parasites. It's a good idea to have separate stool samples over a time, since not seeing anything does not mean they're not there! Parasites have cyclical lives, and somethings cause diarrhea/loose stool to come and go, depending on where in the life cycle they are. They do not necessarily cause bloody stools, but they may. It's a good idea to bring a stool sample with you on your first vet visit (have you made that appointment?), at which time the vet will look and see if they see anything, but they will probably treat your cat if they feel symptoms are indicative of a parasitic infection. They usually give a pill, but may give a shot. Good luck, and give us an update. kk
