Cat scooching like a dog

I caught my kitty (4.5 months old, male) scooching across the carpet on his butt like dogs sometimes do. (At least, it's behavior I'd only seen in dogs before.) What might this mean? Is his bum itchy, or does it indicate a particular condition? He was tested negative for parasites two months ago and he does not go outside. He does have a vet appointment this Friday for his rabies shot, so I can ask about it then, but wanted to see if anyone here thought it was serious. Thanks!

My 2 year old Molly has been doing this since 3 months of age. There are times when her anal glands need to be expressed. I've gotten a half-assed diagnosis of colitis from the vet. Why I term it like that is because no tests, x-rays or whatever else would be needed to back that up were done. Hebased it on her history of scooting and suggested I give her laxatone three times a week. It is my understanding though that "stuff" gets backed up into the anal glands because it's not solid enough or forceful enough to push it out.

Be sure to mention this to the vet and have them check your kitty's anal glands. Perhaps this info can help you.

I agree with Cleo, anal glands could be the cause. Parasites are another known cause, as is some constipation making the area itchy. And as some have mentioned after their pets checked out okay, it may just sometimes feel good. But please do keep that appointment and have your vet take a good look in that whole area. Let us know how you make out, ok?
