Liver Biopsy came back

Post by Geoff »

well.. last night we went and talked to our vet and got the results to GreyBear's liver biopsy that she had done a few days prior to her passing on. From what the vet said, they are really worried that it was FIP. With having Gabriel in the household as well, she was really worried that it could have been passed on to him as well. We're not sure what it is we can do from here. They arent ruling out that it was some kind of bacterial thing, but its more consistant with FIP than anything else.

Gabriel on the other hand is sick also.. but when isnt he?. he has a chronic URI. We have him on Baytril shots and started with the Clynda to try to jump start our little guy's immune system. Cross some fingers for us?. Hopefully we can get him back up on his feet and somewhat healthy again. Since he's had this URI he hasnt eaten.. which im sad to say has been a while. oh.. we've also got the poor little guy on this mouthwash stuff for the colicci that seems to have sprung up..

oi.. what a mess... ill update later on Gabriel .. hoping for the best..

he has possibly a runny nose or clogged respiratory tract he may no be able to smell his food...when they can't smell it they will not eat so you might try using saline nasal drops to clear up any gook...so he can smell the food...i know this is not much help but there are too many unanswered and unanserable questions.good luck

I concur with Davet, non-medicated saline nasal drops or mist may help immensely. Ask your vet about Afrin (make sure it's non-medicated) and use once daily. You could also try a humidifier in a closed room at night as he sleeps (do NOT use menthol with the humidifier).

It's very important that you get him to eat. The antibiotics could also be preventing him from eating simply due to an upset stomach, so try getting him to eat before giving the antibiotics. Try bland food, or ask your vet about Hill's A/D, I've never known a kitty yet to refuse this food. You can also mix it with water, which may be ideal right now because he could be dehydrated.

Unfortunately, the liver biopsy alone may not confirm FIP, in my experience, a total necropsy would have revealed more. I'm assuming this was either not offered to you, or that you chose not to have it done for personal reasons. For Gabriel's sake, as soon as you can afford to, I'd opt for a full feline serology, making absolutely certain that hemobart and other blood-borne disease/anemia is ruled out. Please speak to your vet about that in greater detail.

I'm sorry the biopsy camme back with such a disturbing analysis. I hope it isn't true for Gabriel's sake. I've got you guys in my thoughts and I hope that whatever Gabriel has will have nothing to do with Grey Bear's condition and that he will recover soon.
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

was the case on why he wasnt eating.. i do know that when cats cant smell, they wont eat. we've got some nasal drops that we're using and it does look like hes starting to get rid of the gunk in his eyes and it sounds like he can breathe a bit easier..

we have like 5 cans of A/D from when we were trying to feed Greybear. He loved that when he was accually able to eat a small amount.. funniest thing.. Gabriel will accually eat Nutri-Cal straight out of the tube. We couldnt get Greybear to even look at it, but Gabriel would attack our hands to get to the tube, it was really cute. We're doing what we can each day when we get home from work for him, i.e. dipping a cotton swab in some warm water and gently wiping away the stuff at the tip of his nose, so the drops will accually go in instead of just dripping off onto the floor.

just a bit frustrating when our little guy follows us around crying and there really isnt anything more that can be done :? but.. we'll get him through this.. thanks for the advice
