Another toad story..

Post by Marty »

I was watering outside, and, one more time, Biscotti was play-barking at something. The something was under the hose reel, and she (Biscotti) was soaked (yes, the hose was dripping and had a hole). I found a small toad, not longer than 2 inches, and Bisc was pawing the mulch all around the toad, but not touching the toad at all. In fact, she seemed to be trying to teach foster Louie to play with the toad. Louie didn't seem to be any more interested than to watch. Hubby released the toad outside of our "dangerous yard."

Glad Biscotti and Louie are okay.. you probably know this but here's some info on what to do in case of poisoning. One way dogs are poisoned by toads is by drinking water from a bowl a toad has frequented.

Something the article doesn't mention is that flushing the mouth with water from a hose should be done from the back corners of the mouth torward the front to avoid washing the toxin down the throat of the poisoned dog or cat.

I don't think this toad was poisonous. We had a Bufo in our garage when we lived in FL. Those are huge...and I was warned of the dangers. Our water dish is kept in the house, but that was interesting to know. Thanks for the article!

Just for information... all toads of genus Bufo are toxic. Here's a link to a very cool toad site for GA - it lists toads and frogs who are your neighbors including four different Bufo toads. The site has location maps and sound files as well as good photos so you can ID any toads you may see and/or hear. Interesting site....

Oops, I guess we ought to be more careful with toads...

based on the maps, it most likely was the Southern toad. Well, I hope it is in someone else's yard now. Thanks for the links...I will bookmark it.
