Traci, need help....found few week old kitten.

Post by Corinne »

My neighbor found a tiny kitten a few weeks old. His paws aren't completely formed, and his ears do not look like they are open yet. He is starting to be able to walk, and has fur. How old do you think he is? My neighbor bought a bottle, and I am keeping him for the day. She is not able to keep him and neither am I. I've been calling vets and shelters. One shelter said they would take him, but probably have to put him to sleep...their nursing mother is overworked. The other is closed today. What can we do with him, and how do we care for him until someone can take him? We are in NY 30 miles of NYC. Any help is very very appreciated. Thanks.

This kitten must be very young only a week maybe?

Here is a link to help you. The most important thing is warmth and feeding with formula. Good luck, and I am sure Traci will post soon.

Corinne, ideally this kitten needs to be seen by a vet ASAP...You need to find out about his paws, paws are indeed fully formed/developed at birth, so if you feel he is missing digits or they appear deformed, this needs adressed by a vet...also, you said ears not open, not sure what you mean by that???

I think his paws/claws are okay...just that he's always clinging. His ears are still together...looks like it could be normal for a kitten his size. His is very active, eats, wets, and sleeps. He has a loud voice. I am keeping him warm and feeding him hourly. However, I did hear a few little sneezes. Hopefully, Luipa will be able to help. I will drive him anywhere in this metro area plus.

Do you mean his hears are still flat against his head? If so, he's probably less than 3 weeks of age.

Is he eating solid kitten food or nursing formula from a kitten bottle? Remember, kittens less than 4 weeks of age need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate after feeding....use a soft, moist gauze pad or similar to stimulate his genitals and anal area to ensure that he goes....

Update

My neighbor took the kitten back, and she will take care of him for unless we can find someone else. Thanks for the help. She knows about keeping him warm and rubbing him after he eats. I will keep you updated.

Good news! The little kitten has been placed!

My friend went into a vet on the way over to pick up the kitten, and they gave her a number of a woman near here that will nurse the cat and then place him. So the kitten is now with someone who knows what to do for him!!!! Thank you for your help. Between the kitten being placed and the power going back on, it has turned out to be a good day.

I was going to say that I know of someone that could take this little one as well. I am glad to read that it is in the care of someone knowledgeable. I hope it pulls through okay. Sounds almost like an inbreeding problem. :(
