female cat spraying

HI,

firstly I'd like to say what a great site! I have learned so much about cats by just browsing!

Ok, my problem - I have a one and a half year old female cat (fixed up). In the last few months she has started spraying! She goes to the kitty litter tray, hops in, but sprays up the walls instead of weeing in her tray!!

Mum and I thought she was doing it because her tray must have been too dirty for her, so we started cleaning it every day and completely emptying it and washing the tray every two or three days. We now go through a lot kitty litter and the laundry stinks!!!

She is my little baby and apart from this is so well behaved!

The first and most appropriate thing to do is get her seen by your vet immediately, to rule out potential urinary tract infection.

What are you using to clean the box (what disinfectant, etc), did you recently move the box, or change litters? Any recent changes in her environment such as stress, stressful events?

You might want to have her checked for problems by your vet..urinary tract infection is often that cause for any type of inappropriate urination. If all checks out fine then you can look at modifying the behavior. Usually it takes time and patience. I had one who was doing this and after a couple of vet checks she was fine physically...so I started trying different litter and litter box configurations. Finally found something she likes...newspaper laid flat...not shredded...not pellets...but laid flat! Go figure, she pees like a paper trained puppy!!
