Cleaning of cat's teeth

Post by de12398 »

The VET highly recommended that we get our cat's teeth cleaned. Our black male cat is six years old, and we've not done any in-home cleaning of his teeth (not sure he'd tolerate anything now!).

I've read a few article's on the importance of good dental hygene for cats...ie. bad bacteria can cause health problems if swallowed.

However, my concern is having our cat go under general anesthesia for the cleaning.

Anyone have any opinions? Should I not worry?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Ask your vet about a pre-surgical blood screen to determine the anesthesia candidacy of your kitty. If kitty hasn't been under anesthesia for anything other than neutering as a kitten, also ask about an ECG to monitor heart function.

Make sure your vet maintains kitty under ISO, it's the safest gas anesthetic available. Any further questions, don't be afraid to ask your vet and get your concerns met.

Like Traci said, definitely have a pre-surgical blood screen done. Despite their young ages, 3 and 2, I had it done for both my girls. My 2 year old's appointment is on hold for now until I find another vet not willing to call me neurotic for requesting such bloodwork. Nonetheless, the results were fine and my mind is at ease.

It's definitely worth it!
Good luck,
