My Cat Pee'd in my BED!

Post by Lauriemay »

I couldn't believe my eyes yesterday! My cat of 2 years decided to take a large pee in the center of my BRAND NEW $1,000 mattress!!!!!!! And of course all over all my blankets, etc., etc. I have never ever seen her do this before and I'm very concerned. Cats know not to pee where they sleep so why would she do this to me? I can't even look at her the same anymore because I'm so disgusted by her. If my husband knew it got on the mattress I think he would of gotten rid of her on the spot. I steamcleaned the mattress immediately, and there is no stain to be found now, although it still sickens me. I couldn't sleep last night very well thinking about it. I steamcleaned the mattress and flipped it so I wasn't right on the spot but my mattress is only 1 month old and very expensive. I washed all the blankets, but will normal washing get cat pee out? I believe I know why she did it, her litter box needed changing desparately, which was on my schedule for yesterday to do but I guess she couldn't wait. I'm just looking for advice.. Has this ever happened to anyone else out there and how do you fix the problem!

Thank you,

Laurie

First thing that always comes to mind when a cat urinates in an inappropriate place is that something is wrong physically. I'd recommend having her checked by your vet as soon as possible to rule out infection. However, since you mentioned that her litterbox had not been cleaned that could very well be the reason she did this. Don't be angry at her, she wasn't doing anything to make you mad. Cats like clean bathrooms and if their litter boxes aren't cleaned they find another place. They also have ways of telling us something is not right, that is why I urge you to have her checked for infection.

I'd recommend getting some Nature's Miracle, you can find it at most pet stores, and using it to wash your blankets. Regular detergent won't get rid of the smell....you might not be able to smell it but she will. You might consider getting a second litterbox if you have only one to help avoid this problem in the future. Please don't stay mad at your kitty...she will pick up on your anger.

It's not uncommon at all when an owner brings in a new item into the environment, especially furniture. Who knows the reasons, could be scent, intimidation, fear, stress, etc. The important thing is to recognize that she didn't do this to spite you, it was more of a feline instinct to do so (for whatever the reason, put your anger aside and deal with the resolution)

As you said, her litterbox needed changing, so coupled with the new mattress, problem revealed. Solution...clean her box, try to keep up with it, use enzymatic cleaners for the mattress, and most commercial laundry detergents will get the scent and stains out of the bedding.

Please try to think rationally, she didn't do this to spite you, again see the possible reasons above. As for your husband, it should be an equal effort between you to care for the pets, to understand that accidents will occur as a normal part of pet ownership. Dealing with it with a calm, reasonable, and positive approach will yield more results than anger, disgust or disdain. Your kitty is depending on you to work on solutions, not to repirmand her or ignore her needs because you feel slighted.

Hopefully this was a one-time incident only. But, if it occurs again, take a closer look at her litterbox for cleanliness, location and accessibility, and take into consideration your stress, she can pick up on that and react to it. If there is an undue amount of stress in the environment, and this occurs again, get her checked by your vet (inlcuding urinalysis) to rule out potential urinary tract infection. Then focus on reducing stress in the environment.

I'm not an expert but in my opinion, you answered your own question as to why this happened. Her litterbox was due for a changing and yes, when it's dirty they won't use it.

My sister had this problem not too long ago with her cat who urinated on a blanket because his box was well overdue for a cleaning. It's not so much that they do it on purpose in one particular spot, just that it's where it happens; like not being able to hold it in anymore. And judging by the "large" amount you've stated, it sounds as if she was holding alot for a while.
...and how do you fix the problem!
Be sure to keep the schedule daily on supplying her with a clean litterbox and if need be give her a second or even third litterbox.
I can't even look at her the same anymore because I'm so disgusted by her.
She won't know why you're disgusted by her but will pick up on your attitude and disdain and may exhibit a more stressful form of behavior. I understand a $1,000. month old mattress is something to be upset about. I had not one, but two antique rugs valued at $8,000. destroyed by my cats. One was repairable, the other was not. I solved the problem of valuables by not having them on display. Some may question why bother having something if you can't enjoy it. I enjoy the love, warmth and cuddles of my kitties more than a rug -- that's for sure!

Good luck!

Maybe your kitty was trying to tell you something about the condition of her litter box? Maybe she wants you to make it a little higher on your list of priorities. I adopted a senior cat that had actually been adopted and RETURNED a few times before I got her, with her previous adoptive people citing "litter box problems." I'd heard that lots of cats are really picky about their litter boxes, so I decided to be picky about it, too. Got the largest one I could find, and at first cleaned it every single time she used it. Now I just do it twice a day, morning and evening. But it's the first thing I do when I get up, and the last thing before going to bed, in case she wants to use it during the night. It's kind of funny - she'll poop anywhere in the box, but only pees in ONE corner.

Anyway, by making her litterbox needs the first priority, so far she hasn't had a single accident. Since she's an indoor-only cat, she's basically a "captive" in my apartment and must depend on me for everything, so I figure at the very least she deserves to have things as comfortable and pleasant for her as possible, especially her "bathroom". Every now and then she might leave the box with a "dangler" attached to her butt or her tail... but that's 'cause she's a Persian and her hair is practically long enough to BRAID...... (Too bad they don't make some kind of a silicone-based hairspray that could be applied to a Persian's rear-end "plumage", to discourage the adherence of danglers.........hahaha!)

I just wanted to thank all of you for your posts. Really, I sounded like such a mean person but am not at all. I do love my cats - ( I have two) it just shocked me with what she did. One person said it may have been an accident and she couldn't hold it any longer - this is not true. She definately went on my bed to make sure that I saw it or to spite me for not changing her box yet. She NEVER EVER sleeps on my bed. Hardly ever goes in my room... so she went there for a purpose.

It was definately my fault, busy schedules, and not enough kitty time I guess. Her box is scooped out daily but it needed changing that day. It was the same day I always change it - just didn't get to it in time I guess. She doesn't normally pee on the rug or anything - she is good that way. That's why this distressed me so much. She did pee alot - so she must of been holding it in for a long time which I know is not good. I feel bad that she went through that. There's got to be a better way to yell at mommy though!

If my husband knew what she did, she would of been surely gone. We had a cat for years who pee'd on my carpet (which we replaced numerous times) and he would not put up with that behavior again. Sure you love your cats, but the peeing on rugs is unsanitary and not safe for small children.

It's not even the fact that the mattress cost so much money - I mean I live week to week, no doubt it bothers me but I've shelled out $1,000's to cure my cats of sickness without a wink. I just recently had my oldest cat who had hypothoyroidism cured with Radiactive Medicine. Cost a lot but worth it because she means so much to me. [My husband even agreed to shell out this money, and I was laid off from my job in order cure Rusti - she has been with us for 13 years and is part of our family].

Thanks for the advice and I'm going to get that cleaner from the pet store that was mentioned...... I was going to throw away my linens, I can't smell anything but just the thought of it! The blanket is old but the sheets are brand new as well as the mattress.
