How much is enough?

Hi there

Quick question. How much water is enough and how much is too much. My little siamese drinks a lot of it - well she drinks a fair amount when I can see her. She jump onto the edge of the bath while I am in it and licks the moisture off my toes and the wet porcelain. I never, on the other hand see my Burmese girl drinking water. How much is too much? The burmese is spayed but not the siamese (yet).

Any thoughts?

iseriously doubt that a normalhealthy cat will or could drink too much water..they atre just like kids, some normal kids drink normal water (what ever that is ) and some or thirsty all the time...a urinalysis would tell you if either one i dehydrated or hydrated but it sounds normal to me....does tha tickle when she licks off your toes....sounds like a new type of fun stuff...

How old are they? Technically, normal water consumption for a healthy adult cat would = 100-200 ml per day per cat, but have to take into account the age, weight, activity level, individual physiology, hydration status, concurrent health problems, etc.

When you mention water in the tub, this would be normal, as in interest rather than necessity.

If your siamese is older than 6 months, time to get that spay appointment immediately.

Thanks for your responses. Tarka - the burmese is 8 months old and Luca, the siamese will be six months at the end of August - I have got her spay scheduled at the vet in mid-august. Luca is incredibly active, always racing around and in and involved with everything. I don't think that she is unhealthy - I was just a little concerned. I will ask the vet to check when she goes for her spay and microchipping.

Just as a matter of interest - if Luca starts to call before I get her spayed - apart from the obvious danger of her getting out and getting pregnant - is there anything that I need to be worried about? In other words, will her personality or anything be affected by that? Would the operation itself be more complicated?

Nothing really to be too concerned about except normal in-heat behavior which could drive you and your family insane (with caterwawls, promiscuous behavior, etc, and will continue until she's spayed, the cycle is about once every two to four weeks). However, if you ever notice her spotting blood, contact your vet immediately and then try to up the spay appointment.

If she is in heat at the time of the spay, your vet may do one of two things. One, he may suggest waiting until she is out of heat. Or, two, he may proceed with the spay but may charge you slightly extra for it, as the procedure may be more involved (blood vessels, inflammation, etc). It depends on his preference, but she can be safely spayed while in heat.

No, it isn't ticklish for me - but I am not that ticklish. My husband would prolly go through the roof though!
