Anyone know how to nix litter box odors??

Post by Nurse_Jamie »

Does anyone know any tricks to nix litter box odors? I keep my kitten's litter box in the laundry room, which is pretty small. And I clean it more than once a day. But there is still a lingering odor in there. It's not real, real bad, but I don't want a smell in there at all. My husband didn't really want a cat in the first place for that reason and if it starts stinking, he will go balistic. Anyone know any tricks to keep the smell gone? And can anyone recommend some good litter that reduces smell?

THANKS!!!!

Well I use a covered box and Tidy Cat Crystal blend for multi cats.

Takes awhile for an odor to form. There is a Tidy Cat deodorizer you can add to the litter. I chose to use unscented litter.

For my 13 week old kitten I use S'Wheatscoop due to the fact that she tried to eat everything in sight, and I feel safe using this wheat based product instead of the clay.

Hope this helps.

I have found that for us, the very best litter as far as odor control goes is Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat. I actually discovered it as a recommendation from a shelter. I tried it and I really think it's a superior product. I have found it only at Petsmart, and it's not cheap. However, urine clumps hard and you don't have to totally dump the litter very often at all. Even my sister who is very odor-sensitive uses this stuff and is completely satisfied. It cannot be used for small kittens since it is a clumping litter, but it works great for older ones.

Thanks,

why can't kittens use clumping litter?

I haven't heard of that. I'm using that right now for our kitten. What is the danger?

Susan,

I think the problem is if they're younger than about 16 weeks from what Traci has said. They tend to not groom as well and can ingest some of the litter and if they ingest too much, that's bad news for their digestive systems. You can do a search for "kitten" and "clumping" if you want to read more.
