Uveitis?

Post by Tina B and crew »

Traci - doc's eye was cloudy earlier but as the day went on it looks as if it's cleared up some. Still slightly cloudy but you have to look hard to see it, where as this morning it was very evident even from several feet away. Based on the last time I'm assuming it's uveitîs again but last time it didn't do this. I have an appointment first thing Monday but wanted to check with you. There is no discharge, no redness, no squinting, and the nictating membrane seems to be normal.

Can you remind me, the last time this happened, what was the vet's comments? I'm not sure this is uveitis, but maybe something else - needs to be checked. Be sure to tell the vet the cloudiness was short-lived today, and with no other obvious symptoms. Is your vet equipped with a tonometer to check Doc's ocular pressure?

When was his last exam and bloodwork? If at or over a year, should do a thorough checkup.

He was in a year ago for the same thing. I planned on having blood work done. It looks the same as last time but last time it wasn't intermittent like this. It's cloudy again this morning and I'll see if it clears as the day goes on. Still no other symptoms. I'm not sure if the vet has a tonometer but if bot we have the vet school right here. I probably need to take home back for ultrasounds and such but money is so tight right now I've avoided them.

What else could it be besides uveitis?

I actually managed to get him to look at my phone for some pics. The first is just the left eye. The second is both for comparison. They are both a bit blurry but good enough to get an idea. He looked, he didn't hold still. It was not this cloudy last night. Just slightly hazy, and you couldn't tell unless the light hit it a certain way. It was like this yesterday morning, which promoted me to call the vet.
It was the right eye last time.

I'm not sure, Tina, thus the reason the vet should do a thorough exam with the tonometer and possibly dye test to examine the corneas and retina extremely well - if the ocular pressure is off, he will have to investigate further. It's strange that this comes and goes, and I strongly recommend bloodwork to make darn sure all else is well. Not trying to scare you or anything of the sort, just want a very thorough eye exam. If your vet is stumped, don't wait on this, get that referral ASAP. Also ask if there's any possible viral or bacterial infections that react like this (intermittent, and now seemingly, bilateral instead of just one eye?)

I had planned on doing blood work anyway. Last time this happened it was the right eye, this time the left. Rather than improving today it's actually getting worse. Again he doesn't seem to be off any other way. He's eating and acting pretty normal. Seems to be sleeping a bit more but it's one of those cloudy, gray days and the windows haven't been open so all the cats have been quieter than usual. Still no discharge, no redness, doesn't look swollen. But I do know cats are good at hiding pain, and that's what I'm concerned about. Plus I don't want him to lose his eye or his sight if at all possible.

here's a pic I took about an hour ago.

He's running around playing like crazy now! Knocking toys and a TP roll around, jumping out at me from under bed, tearing through the house like a tasmanian devil!! I can see the pupil now but overall it's still very clouded.

Glad my appt is in the morning.

Might want to try to restrict activity. If he has pressure or a headache, it wouldn't be good for all that activity.

If you saved those pics on your phone, take your phone with you tomorrow to show the vet and tell him your observation of both eyes since you first noticed this (when it started, which eye, that it seemed to be clearing up but then was suddenly cloudy again in a short amount of time, etc).

I'm wondering if some sort of infection, or drainage is occuring somewhere, but it demands a thorough exam. Hang in there and please let us know what vet determines tomorrow, ok? Give Doc tons of hugs and kisses for me!
