Marley

Post by Tambrey »

I adopted out a kitten to a couple a while ago, and have him back because they are in process of moving....we have actually had him for a couple of weeks now, because they left a (rental) house with a roof that almost fell in during the last storm, and have to look for a new place to move to, and are living with his aunt in the meantime...her dog does not like cats...

I am not sure if Marley is missing them...or getting sick...or a combination of both...he is not eating...he will drink in sips but he is dehydrated this evening... his third eyelid is out...I put some canned food in front of him and he sniffed around some then turned away...so I have some canned food mashed with warm water and syringe feeding him every hour...
he is about 8 months old...
All he wants to do is lay on my husband's lap, or curl up in my sweatshirt against me...

Of course we have a blizzard going on and they pulled the plows....why do the cats always do this in inclement weather?!

I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow as soon as I can....so in the meantime, I guess all I can do is ask for prayers and keep syringe feeding him warm watery canned food...

So where are the owners? What have they got to say about what he eats, treats, etc and is he current on vaccinations? Was he sick when they dropped him off at your house? Are any of your cats or outdoor cats and kittens sick with anything? (feline calicivirus and herpes, for example, are extremely contagious between cats).

You need to find out if Marley was already getting severely stressed during the roof problem, moving, etc - stress and moving (and in this case, combined with now staying in another place) is the number one cause of hepatic lipidosis, that needs ruled out immediately!

Do NOT syringe feed every hour. When exactly did he last eat a normal meal? If only today, or even yesterday, you shouldn't be force feeding just yet and certainly not that often - forced feeding can stress them out even more, and if there is something wrong like stomach problems, constipation, obstruction etc, forced feeding can cause more damage than good. However, if it's been more than 2 or 3 days since he has eaten a normal size meal, then get him to vet ASAP! The vet needs to determine if Marley is sick, and depending on how long he's not been eating normally, will need to rule out liver issues, dehydration etc. DO NOT WAIT ON THIS!! (and don't let the owners wait on this, play it safe and get him seen immediately - if liver issues, the longer you wait, the more difficult and costly to treat). Hopefully it won't be HL, but Marley needs seen ASAP.

Marley is gone :(

I have tried to contact his owners...they have not responded...my husband talked to his brother lastnight at bowling and they moved to their new home last week....and have not contacted me nor responded...

When they took Marley it was with the agreement that he would have his shots and be neutered....when I took him to the vet today, they had no record of him being there....I am so pissed....upset....angered...hurt...I failed this kitten....I have never had one that I rehomed end up sickly or uncared for....
I knew this man and his brother. ...but I have nothing good to say about the one right now....his brother is a good man....and i will not place any fault on him for his brothers neglect. ...

I know liver and kidney shutting down does not happen overnight....and by the time we see outward signs it is pretty severe....

even though when he came here I kept him in a separate bedroom and visited him often...he ate well played well and was just a kitten.....but now he was in severe failure and his body temp was down to 96.5....so I made the decision to let him go....
I do not have the funds to treat and try to bring him back...and in his eyes...he had given up already... th eyes were blank....so he got anesthesia to go to sleep and I held him while he did....then the vet came and gave him the shot...

I will spread the word to never ever let this couple have a cat or dog...too bad they are expecting a baby...I hate to see how they care for that. ..

Safe and gentle journey, sweet Marley

In the future, please, you need to thoroughly screen potential adopters.

Traci.....I do screen...I have even gone so far as to randomly, call the vet they said they use and ask if the new kitten/cat has been brought in for a checkup and vaccines etc....not details...just a yes or no....
I always tell them if it does not work out for whatever reason that I will take the furkid back, no worries....

Recently my husband and I spent almost 2 hours at the home where 2 others went for Christmas...because the kids were crying and sick with worry because they were gone...I told mom to check the laundry room....behind the washer and dryer....she had never pulled them out since she lived there...but she did...and found a BIG hole in the (internal) wall behind the dryer...which vented out through a hole in the floor, which was sealed well...and 2 tails hanging down from up inside....

hubby spent the better part of an hour on his back trying to coax them from their hiding spot...then he found some poster board and packing tape to temporarily patch it and we will go back later with drywall to repair it right...

In this instance...with Marley...I was lenient because I have known the family for so many years....his mom...aunt...brother...cousins....they are all caring animal lovers so I did not follow up other than to facebook him once in a while to ask how things were...when Marley was with them...and I did receive a picture of him curled up on his shoulder....

Who knows....maybe it is something Marley was born with...his other littermates died...and it took longer for him to show symptoms...I do not know...
