More new kitty questions

Post by Talula509 »

I posted on here a week or so ago about my new kitten with the upper respiratory infection. She has gained about a pound, has been eating and drinking and playing when she's not sleeping. Last night i noticed her eyes had gotten considerably redder and i heard a little wheeze every third breath she took. Not wanting to take any chances i took her to the emergency vet, and of course the wheeze was gone when we got there and she acted hyper and kitten like. The vet took her temp (normal), weighed her (good weight), and listened to her lungs and heart. She said she had a healthy heart and she didn't here anything unusual in the lungs aside from a normal upper RI infection sound on inhilation. She diagnosed her eyes as a secondary conjunctivitus infection. I talked to my regular vet today and he prescribed a second round of antibiotics at a higher dose due to the weight gain.

Alright...now that you have the history here are the concerns.....
Today she has been sleeping alot more than i'm used to seeing her sleep. She's still played a bit, and she's eaten a bit and drank lots of water. It also seems thats she's a bit gassy (its only me and her...and it ain't me doing it! ). What is normal for kittens to sleep? could it have anything to do with the fact that it is 105 degrees outside (AC on all day...but maybe she senses the heat?) And is gas in kittens normal? Shes had a stressful day (with the vet "trauma" last night, the fact that i forgot to put her in the bedroom before i started the vacuum, and a 6year old coming over to play earlier) Could that cause the sleepyness? Finally, anyone know if there are side effects to kitty antibiotics? (clovomax or something like that) Sorry for all the questions...i'm new at this!

Can't find your previous post, did you use your current username?

As for the clavamox, yes, while rare, it can cause an upset stomach for some kittens and cats, so call back your vet first thing in the morning, he may need to reduce the dose as before or opt for another antibiotic.

As for sleeping, it could be stress, but check on her frequently to make sure she is not developing a fever, or is lethargic, not eating, etc. If any of these symptoms present themselves, call your vet immediately.

I myself just went through this with my new kitten having an URI, and she was on Clavamox. My vet explained that she was seeing a lot more harder cases of colds from this particular adoption facility where we got her.

She had her cold for two weeks, and as in your case her antibiotics were increased in dosage. CHloe, my kitten slept quite a bit, but continued to eat and drink normally.

Kitten sleep a lot in the beginning normally, nothing to be too concerned about. If she seems congested or cannot breathe properly due call your vet back.

I hope your kitty is feeling better soon.

Hi there, yes, kittens are like children! They race around like mad things and then,,,they're asleep and sometimes it seems like , for ages. If kitty missed naps due to hoover and six year old, kitty would need to catch up. As for the gas, I have had the pleasure of two kits who suffered with gas! One used to race around the room on my furniture so the smell was at a good height and in every bit of the room! My current gasser waits till you pick him up, especially my friend, and does killer smells!!!! I'm pretty sure your kitten is fine. It's not sleeping you need to worry about as much as lethergy....that's not good. Congrats, take care, hugs Ann xxxx
