Disposing of cat litter

Post by Tina B and crew »

Anyone have any good solution to disposing of litter aside from throwing it in the garbage? The problem here is we do not have garbage pick up so we have to take our garbage one of several locations. Unless we take it daily - which is not only a PITA but also requires that we go that way, have to deal with heaving bags of heavy, smelly litter into the dumpster, have to drive the truck because there is no way I am transporting it in our trunk, and have the expense of gas to get there - we are dealing with heavy loads and odor. In the winter it isn't so bad - it can sit in the bin we have for it for a while and not get too, ahem, fragrant. But in the summer we have to dispose of it nearly every single day to keep the odor from becoming overbearing - and keep it far away from the house. We can't flush, nor would I even if a litter says it is flush-able - we have a septic tank. What we have been doing is double bagging when we scoop and putting it in a bin dedicated to just litter.

I wanted to compost (no, I wouldn't use it on edibles) but that means having to use one of the compost-able litters. I may switch one box and see how they do. I did that for a while but switched back to clay when Chunk started peeing outside the box. The other advantage to the compost-able litters is the weight - so much lighter than clay.

Has anyone composted? Any other creative solutions? I thought about doing the litter genie thing but we'd still have to dispose of it and I'm not sure it's any better than double bagging with grocery bags - plus I'm fairly conscious of reducing the amount of plastics I use.

I just told the cats they need to learn to use the toilet and flush.

I got nothing. The main problem it seems is the weight, gas/distance/time it takes to get it to a dump. The problem with composting is that you'd have way too much, and how long can you wait for it to break down and exactly what would you use the resulting compost for?

You could bury it, but I would be afraid it would seep up to the ground (odor) like community waste dumps do.

My only idea is to get a new trash bin dedicated only to kitty litter (or a few more manageable smaller ones), then haul it a couple times a week, but you'd have to have hubby there to help you with it (weight).

Other than that, there's the expense of other solutions.

Like a sort of trailer to hitch up to the truck (trailer would need sides so bins wouldn't tip or fall over or out) - keep in the trailer 4 or 5 smaller size trash bins, load bins with bagged litter, cover with tarp, take to dump or trash pickup location once or twice a week or as necessary.

I am dealing with a similar issue....our garbage used to be picked up once a week....when I scoop litter, I I put the smaller (grocery store) bags into a saved cat liter or cat food bag...then wrap that in a regular garbage bag....

But now....they gave us recycling bins to use....they think we will have less garbage now that we recycle, which is partly true...but now....actual garbage gets picked up every 2 weeks and recycling gets picked up every 2 weeks...
So the truck is still here once a week, we just need to remember which refuse to put at the curb now!

My fear is that IF we ever start to warm up here....litter sitting outside for TWO weeks is gonna STINK...and I feel sorry for the garbage men when the bags get crushed and the odor escapes out...

I have been considering just dumping it loose in the small trailer we haul behind the lawn tractor and taking it out to dump somewhere in the back two acres....
My problem there....within the next 2 years I hope to have that converted to an orchard of a variety of dwarf fruit trees, shrubs and vines...

I wish I had an answer for you...if I come up with one, I will let you know!

I know, it's the dilemma with no easy solutions! I am seriously considering going back to one of the compostable litters just for weight relief. Lugging the huge bags of clay is tough. Maybe composting in summer and disposing at the dump in winter. Like I said, I don't mind our method in the winter, but come summer it just gets bad. And I double bag AND sprinkle some litter deodorizer in the bag to no avail.
