I lost my Allie tonight.
I lost my Allie tonight.
My heart is broken. My little girl started coughing and gasping for breath right after we went to bed. I first thought she had some hair caught in her throat or had another hair ball. It wasn't very bad to start and it only lasted a couple of minutes. She settled down and I think went to sleep. She slept for about 30 minutes then started coughing again. This time it had a different sound. It sounded bubbly and foamy. It didn't stop so I called my vet's office. They are open for emergencies 24 hours. The vet immediately gave her Lazix (is that right? The diuretic) and took a chest xray. It showed an enlarged heart and fluid in her lungs. The vet was treating symptoms and admitted she couldn't be sure what the underlying cause was. I left her in their care and was on my way home when they called to tell me she was failing fast. I turned around and went back. Allie was obviously in distress and she was coughing up bloody fluid. The vet said she thought her chance of surviving was no more than 5% and that she was obviously suffering. My sweet girl was sent to The Bridge a few minutes later. Allie is the 4th Sheltie I've lost, and it never gets any easier. Damn I hate this part of having pets. Run free little girl. Go find Mickey and Angel and have fun herding each other.

Oh noooooo, Karen, what a heartbreaking tragedy for you. I know how much Allie meant to you (as all your babies do), I cannot imagine the shock and heartache you're going through right now. Please know you're not alone, we're right there with you, shedding tears beside you and feeling your pain. I wish there were something I could say to help ease that pain.
Safe and gentle journey, sweet sweet Allie, you will be missed so much (((((((((HUGS))))))))))

You are ever in my thoughts, dear friend Karen!

Thanks so much everyone. I miss her. Just a few minutes ago, I was finishing my dinner and had one French fry left. I was full and I knew the dogs would enjoy a little treat. Without even thinking, I tore it into three pieces. I think Dylan and Foxy were both happy - after they got their piece, I tore the other one in half, so they each got 2 pieces. I guess it will take a while to get used to the change (and to stop crying every time I think of her).
