AUGH!! Please remove the "cats taken in here" neon
Re: AUGH!! Please remove the "cats taken in here"
I still think he might have an owner, he is neutered, relatively good shape, clean, etc - and his disposition with you indicates he is not afraid of people (that you can determine anyway).
The food thing - some cats eat more because they are stressed, or change of environment, etc - sometimes they eat less.
The fur - I have a neighbor who had two cats with long hair and they were matted all the time, but she allowed them indoor/outdoor (in every night and on cold or rainy or stormy days etc) - so many people have indoor/outdoor cats and still haven't the mind to brush the mats out of their cat's fur, so keep that in mind.

I am sure he has had an owner. He isn't some random stray. His condition doesn't surprise me even for an "owned" cat around here. But it is apparent that if his owner is nearby they are not moving mountains to find him. Word has been sent via the internet up and down the road I live on. I have had at least 3 inquiries but he does not match the description of any of those who are close by. The one cat whose description he did match was about 20 miles away, had been missing for 6 months, and wasn't him. It was so close that I almost screamed for joy when I saw the picture the lady sent me but when I compared it with him the markings were slightly different. Someone 2 miles down the road has lost a cat and is very distraught over it but it is female. At least I have some people helping me out, sharing the info etc. I still plan on doing flyers now that the wind has died down. I will call vets office and the animal control tomorrow.

Well at least I am getting lots of contact with people on this one. His photo has been share more than 30 times on FB! One lady who lives down the road has offered to give me food and litter to help defray my costs. I'd really rather get him into a home though. I don't want to go through another long term foster situation.
One other odd thing I noticed - at the base of his sternum he has what feels like a bone spur. It sticks out quite a ways and I can easily feel it when I pet his chest. It's odd. When I first picked him up I though maybe he had a tumor or something (and of course when OH ****! NO!) but upon feeling it closely it feels like the bone. It doesn't seem to bother him when I touch it. I guess without xrays it is hard to say what it is, and I cannot vet this cat. He's also sneezing.

BTW...someone REALLY loves lap time. I have never had a cat that was such a lap cat.

I know, me too Cleo. I've been getting regular emails from one lady who is trying to help me find his home. She told me there was an ad in the paper this morning for a lost gray and white cat in an area that is probably 20+ miles from here. While it is a long way a way she said she has heard of people's neighbor's snatching their cats and dropping them off somewhere due to vengeance or the fact that they didn't like the cat in their yard. It wouldn't surprise me but it makes me angry that people would do that. I am not holding my breath on this one but will call the number in a bit.
I was thinking yesterday that since I found him over the holiday it is possible that his people do not know he is gone because they were out of town. Like I said, it is clear that he has been outdoors due to the mats and plant matter that was in the mats but I don't know if he was someone's outdoor cat or if he's been out that long. Just hoping I find a home for him soon.

The lost cat ad was a no go..their's was a short hair. I have flyers printed out and am taking them to post on bulletin boards and at local vet offices.

I think I might have just one upped the plans we had to transport Doc to Michigan. A friend in Wyoming may be willing to take him if I don't find his home. Wyoming. That's a lot further than Michigan.

Re: AUGH!! Please remove the "cats taken in here"
Today I got some flyers out to vets offices that were close by (the closest being 17 miles), called the animal control office to see if they had a report of a cat matching his description (nope), and found ticks on the boy. Two engorged ticks and two tiny ticks - like larvae or nymph size. I think I got them all. I also cut another mat out of his fur. I can only do one at a time because he gets irritated with me.
I have not heard one word from the rescue agency. Zero, zip, nada. I know they are overwhelmed and need fosters badly but the least they could do is return my email.
Right now Wyoming is starting to look good.

I can handle short-haired cats. But my allergies won't tolerate long-haired cats. I know it's not the hair, it's the dander, but I think the sheer volume of dander that long-haired cats fur holds is what does it. Otherwise I would have offered to take this cuddle buddy off your hands, too. Keeping my fingers crossed for his family to find him.
