Kitten Peeing and I am worried! This is a long one...

Post by Meghan »

I have a four and a half month old male kitten. Oscar is very cute and very cuddly and affectionate! For the past few weeks he has been peeing around the house. Initially, it started when we accidentally left the door closed to his cat door, he peed on my tan down comforter that was on the couch. We cleaned that and then brought it home and put it on the bed. I was laying in bed and he came in the bedroom (in the morning) and jumped up on the bed and peed on the comforter again. We took that comforter off the bed and cleaned it again. We put a different comforter on the bed and about a week later Oscar came into the bedroom and jumped up on the bed with me and peed on it! I called the vet and they said sometimes cats smell you very strongly and they are "protecting" you from other cats when they pee where you have been......He has also taken a liking to peeing on a tan fuzzy rug I have in the bathroom and actually did that about a week ago. I took him to the vet today to have his booster shots. My husband and I got home tonight and he peed on a blanket that was on the floor (right in front of us!) and then I was walking down the steps to my family room and noticed the carpet was damp and smelled it and he had peed there! I don't know what to do! I love this kitten more than anything and I have never owned a kitten that doesn't just pee in his litter box. He uses the litter box frequently and I keep it very clean, I have seen pee in the litter box so I know he is peeing in there....Can someone help, please??

Thank you.

You need to see a new vet, and have Oscar checked for urinary tract diseases or other underlying health issues which need to be addresses ASAP. What your vet said about "protecting" you is BS IMO... Get him in to a different vet tomorrow morning if you can.

btw, is he neutered?

Kate is right, you must rule out urinary tract infection....and your vet is handing you a line, his theory doesn't apply whatsoever.

Btw, has he been neutered yet? If not, might want to discuss that with your new vet, neutering may reduce the tendency to mark his territory (or, in this case, yours)

Please don't delay, get him seen by a new vet right away, be prepared for a urinalysis, this is the only way to detect a urinary tract infection.

My first question is: Is your kitten neutered? If not, he needs to be right away. They mature early and will spray around the house even earlier than 41/2 months. A good friend of mine adopted two males about 3 months old and they started spraying everywhere, and of course are going for neutering immediately.

Of course, as Traci has stated have him checked for urinary tract infection first.

Good luck.

Thank you all for the replies. No Oscar has not been neutered and we have an appointment in two weeks for that to be done. I made myself unclear in the email before. The vet tech told me that he is "protecting" us, the vet himself didn't tell me that. The vet did tell me he is sure this issue will clear up after Oscar is neutered. What are the signs of a urinary tract infection? Also, do you think it is a good idea to have him in a smaller room with his litter box and food/water until he is neutered? I have read other posts that say that seems to help, too. I really think he is marking his territory because this morning he was sniffing around the area that I cleaned last night with vinegar---where he had peed!!

Thank you so much!

your already seeing it...uti's can be painfull and they will try to go in places they feel are most comforatable for them...the rug in the bathroom and your tan comforter are probably the two he has choosen to help feel better about it.

he needs a urinalysis to rule this out, waiting for two weeks is not advisable. its all speculation right now, and Oscar needs some conclusive testing.
