I just talked with the vet student who is working with Doc. Last night he showed some interest in food, but didn't really eat on his own. This morning though, she said he sniffed, seemed interested, and actually licked a little bit of his food...but that's about it. That's great though, because before he wasn't doing much more than an occasional sniff!! She also said he seemed more alert and very interested in all that was going on around him. It is my understanding that they are going to keep him until he starts eating and drinking on his own, which is fine by me. I hope to get up to visit him today or tomorrow...but if not on Friday for sure, if he hasn't been discharged by them (but I have a feeling this will take a few days). My life is swamped and I have way too much on my plate but VA tech sure has made that portion more palatable!!

Second update today and not much change. I didn't get up to visit Doc today but am busting my but finishing my presentation and reading for class tomorrow night so I can see him tomorrow. I know having the comfort of someone he is familiar with might help. He's still alert, still showing some slight interest in food, at a few bites on his own with some coaxing but that's about it. Maybe I can get him interested tomorrow! I just want to hug the little guy and tell him I love him. What an ordeal he has been through!

It is true that the owner's presence can speed up recovery, so anything you can do to see him will definitely help. I do understand your cramming for school, though!

The interest in food is a great sign, baby steps, but progress!

yes...my mom had a dog once that had broken her femur...car accident...Mom did not get in to see her over the weekend and went after work Monday afernoon....the vet said he was so glad to see her and took her right back to where Sheba was resting...he said she had not eaten or shown interest in anything...Mom said her name...she perked her ears and looked up....and then actually got up to move closer to Mom...and after that...she began to regain her strength.....

And darnit....I keep wanting to "like" posts....LOL

Ok folks...I need more prayers! I know I've been asking my fair share lately. Doc is going back into surgery tomorrow to remove his spleen. The vet noticed some spots on it the other day when they did the ultrasound and mentioned it to me (she believes they are infarction from some small blood clots) but didn't think it was anything that needed immediate attention but would probably need it down the road. Since then (that was Tuesday) his spleen has enlarged significantly, developed a lumpy nature and after an ultrasound today the infarctions are more significant. He also has a small spot on his liver which also appeared to be infarction. She said they would take a closer look when he is on the table and probably remove it and then biopsy it. So, she is turning him over to the surgeon and they will likely be taking him into surgery tomorrow. The surgeon and I kept playing phone tag today but she said she'd call me in the morning before surgery.

I went to visit Doc today and he looks incredibly well for a cat that has been through so much. He was alert and actually ate a few bites of food for me as well as a few treats. While I was with him and chatting with the vet I noticed his stomach and could definitely tell the difference. I could feel the spleen myself. She said they would watch him overnight and if they felt it was getting worse they would decide to do emergency surgery over night but she didn't anticipate that.

So please, please say a prayer that this will be it for Doc. He's been through so much and he still has that "i'm not giving up spirit!" It was so good to snuggle with him today. Oh, and he has become the darling of the ICU at the vet school. The vet told me she doesn't think she has been back in the ICU once where someone wasn't in his kennel talking to him, giving him chin scratches or something. He is such a sweet boy!!
