Heartworm test

Post by Marty »

Has something changed? I just got a notice that Buffy is due for one...she just had one done in April.

Not sure, but vets are wanting better compliance, so maybe that's why you're getting a bi-annual notice. Another problem is that vets are aware of owners not giving heartworm meds during fall and winter because they think the mosquito season is over, but unfortunately, that is not the case in some areas.

Yes, we have to give year round. I would think my compliance would show in my purchase of the meds. I wonder if he could refuse to sell me another 6 months supply if I don't do a biannual check...

If that is the case, I might just have to change Buffy's Vet...Java would be better served staying with him for whatever time she has left, I imagine.

BTW, he does this with the Parvo vax also, and I always ignored the notice. I don't have a problem with anything necessary or required by law, but my money is a bit more limited now, and he knows that.

Well, it may not be your vet's particular policy, but rather that of the clinic, or, the way reminders are sent out, they are computerized now, which means when certain dates come up, reminders are sent.

As long as you're giving heartworm meds on a regular basis, I don't think you need a heartworm test twice a year. Those clients who buy heartworm meds on a sporadic basis, or don't get their dogs checked regularly, are the reasons why reminders are sent, some people just don't get it! (the seriousness of heartworm, that is, and why their vets require the test when they haven't complied with the preventative!)
