Found a Preg cat PLEASE HELP
Found a Preg cat PLEASE HELP
I found a Preg cat at my work 2 weeks ago I took her home about 1 week ago ( wanted her to have a safe place to have babies not in the bushes where she was ). She had been a family cat as she had a coler but no id. On Sunday she had 7 babies and all look good however when I got home today the Kittens were dirty and there were spots of blood. I looked a momie and she was licking at her birth canel region. I fed her and checked again now ( 2 hours later) all the kittens were huddled together and mommie was in the nest but off on her own ... breathing seems a bit fast, almost like fast purring but I was not tuching her. I am very worried never had a cat with Kittens before Is this normal?
PLEASE ANY HELP AT ALL WILL BE WELCOME

Hi Dawken,
I don't have any experience with newborn kittens, but it sounds like you're desperate so I'll try to step in here...
You didn't tell us if mama is paying attention to her kittens? Is she eating (and what are you feeding her)? Are all of the kittens feeding? If mama seems restless or is ignoring the kittens, that's a bad sign.
It's sort of hard to tell what's going on exactly from your post. I can't tell if you're just nervous or if something is really wrong. Please look in your phone book for an emergency vet that will be open 24 hours, and describe what is going on to them; they'll be able to determine the severity of what's going on.
Traci has some very good info about kittens under Feline Health on the left column of this board. But there's sure to be an emergency vet somewhere nearby who can help you better!
Good luck and please keep us posted. Thanks for taking care of these babes; it sounds like they need it.

Re: Found a Preg cat PLEASE HELP
Okay, I'm looking at my cat health book, and I'll quote what it says to you:
"Observe the vulva and surrounding areas of the queen (i.e. mama) daily for evidence of abnormal discharges. A bloody discharge is usually present for seven to ten days postqueening (i.e. after the birth). Persistent discharges that are odorous or bloody indicate uterine infections or subinvolution (failure to return to normal size) of placental sites in the uterus. ... Abnormal vulvar discharges, evidence of fetal resorption or abortions, premature kittens, stillborn or mummified fetuses, or weak kittens with neonatal death call for veterinary attention." (The Cornell Book of Cats)
So ... it sounds like that could be completely normal, but I have no idea what qualifies as "abnormal vulvar discharge"...
Try to leave the kittens alone as much as possible, and just make sure mama has everything she needs ... if she's paying attention to them and not abandoning them, letting them feed, etc, that's a good sign.
Grasping at straws here ... again, if you can, call a vet and describe what's going on.
I'll be up for a couple more hours anyway if you want to write back, not that I'll be of much help ....

Re: Found a Preg cat PLEASE HELP
My advice get the MOM and BABIES to a vet or clinic right away to be checked. This could be a sign of infection or other problem in the mother.

Re: Found a Preg cat PLEASE HELP
Mommie and all Kittens made it throu the night. Mommy is feeding them just not cleaning them very well ( but then again I might just be comming into the room at a bad time before she has gotten to them all). I think she is young it might even be her first litter I am not sure. I was very worried about the small drops of blood. When I am in the room she always comes over to say hi ( this cat loves attention ) and If her babies start crying a lot she will go over to them . Maybe I was just freaking out last night but everything I read said mommie will keep the babies very very clean and the first day they were stopless. When I went in today I did not see any new blood at all. I called the vet and they said monitor her for a bit and see what happens as long as mommie is feeding themaand she is and eating herslef that it might just take her a bit of time to get into the whole thing.

I'm so glad you called the vet and that they are okay this morning; thanks for keeping us updated! Do remain in touch with your vet because in any case they'll need to go in for shots, to get wormed, etc....
Please post pictures if you have any.
