With the nonproduction of Interceptor and a bad flea season, my Vet encouraged me to use Trifexis. Java seems to be fine with it, but not Buffy, the Basset with an exceptional nose. Even to me, it smells strongly like pesticide, which I know it is. I cut this humungous pill in half, mixed it with her dry food and some smelly wet food. She ate one half, and I found the other on the floor, so I wrapped it in a pill pocket. But I'm still not sure if she ate it or took it outside and spit it out.
Then her tummy must have been upset last night at some point. But jeez, I'm not sure this is the right stuff for her. I understand this can be a side effect, but I don't think I like it. The directions say to give another one if they heave within an hour...I don't believe that happened as there was no undigested food in the vomit...but why would I want to do that anyway?
I will call the Vet and find something else to give her...and pray for no heartworms...
Just a rant...I have a friend who can't smell the pesticide smell and her dogs (Dobes) eat Trifexis like treats.

I've read that as long as you treat every 3 months, you can prevent heartworms. I dont' recommend a schedule like that, but I don't think you need to worry if you miss one dose.

Karen, I wouldn't recommend that approach to anyone, since not everyone's locale, dog, area's risk/reports are going to be the same.
As for Trifexis, this drug has only been on the market for a very short time, and as with all "new" drugs, I'd be cautious, until more data is collected on side effects. I don't know how many doses have been given since Trifexis' launch but just by glancing at the FDA ADE's (for spinosad at least), the ratio to numerous side effects seems to be pretty high right now, and I also don't know how often the database updates. Granted, some of those ADE's may not be significant if the dogs had other health issues (whereas the Trifexis may not have been the cause), but still.....

Whew, Buffy finally ate...after a day and a half. Not going to do that one again! She was acting fine, just not eating.
Re heartworms, I've heard 10 days is OK, but never heard 3 mos. I honestly would not want to take that chance at all... I had a foster once, Dirk, who was very heartworm positive. With a lot of loving care, he was fine and was eventually adopted out. But I would not want anyone reading this as a guest, to take any chances with their pet. He was very sick for quite a while.
