Ok! I am going to pick him up from the clinic today and hopefully the tomcat odor will diminish and I can spend more time with him and get a better feel for his personality. But if he is as quite and sweet as he was intact I can only imagine it will just get better. I just don't want him to disappoint! He is a beautiful cat. I will also try to get better pictures of him. This is awesome!

BTW...where in MI are you?

He's back from the clinic and doing fine. He was licking pretty badly so they suggested the cone of shame. Poor kitty.

Otherwise he seems to be doing great. He peed and pooped in the carrier on the way home, but fortunately it was just before I got to my driveway and fortunately it didn't get all over him! They said the foot wound looked like a possible healed abscess and suggested having my vet look at it, so I will be keeping an eye on it and calling my vet most likely. Apparently they tried to call me about it but couldn't leave a message for some reason (probably verizon's fault). He weights just over 11lbs and they estimate his age at just under 2 years. I'm wondering if someone around here had a litter of kittens, fed them, socialized them but other than that did nothing else. It wouldn't be the first time and it is all too common in these parts. I'm not terribly concerned about finding his "home" if that is the case.

This spay and neuter clinic is a life saver for this area though. In just under 2 years they have done nearly 8000 surgeries!

Just for safety's sake, one of you should ensure an FELV/FIV snap test is done for him before travelling and before introduction to other cats. Ideally, his first vaccinations done, because no one knows his vaccination history. (I strongly recommend the rabies, FELV and FVRCP, and of course, the FELV/FIV test).

Tina, if you can foster him for a bit while Silvr gets things in order, a bit of time will help keep him healthy before travelling - if there are any absesses or bacterial infection, in addition to the stress of vaccinations, time to recover from all that and his neuter would be ideal before travelling.

Kudos to both of you for working to get the little cutie a new home!!

Traci, yes I can foster him for a while. He has his own little penthouse (climate controlled if need be) so space is not a problem for the moment. He was tested for FIV/FeLV at the clinic but I am happy to do a second test just to be safe. I didn't do all the vaccines, just the rabies for now because of budget constraints. But I will do what it takes to get him into a home, within budgetary constraints of course!

The staff at the vets office loved him and said he was so sweet.

I don't think a second snap test is necessary, if it was negative and was reliable. That said, if it were me, I'd ask them if they have a good success rate on their snap tests (I would imagine low-cost spay/neuter clinics might choose the least expensive tests, which might be problematic - unless the attending vet lent a wise hand in the decision process)

Good on the rabies, good thinking.

I mention the importance of vaccinations though, because if you're caught across county or state lines without proof of vaccinations, you might get in trouble. Generally, the state is usually looking for proof of rabies vaccination because some counties/states are under rabies quarantine due to a positive on a wild critter or two, but distemper vaccine (FVRCP) is necessary as well for kitty's protection. Sometimes, a health certificate is also required, don't know about your area. That's easy though, the vet signs off on a completed form, you keep the copy for your records or when you travel with the pet in particular.

You and Slvr can work this out of course, just wanted to mention.

Thank you for caring so much, you've certainly been busy this week!!

Slvr - bless you for wanting to give this guy a good home. Don't give up on the dog idea though - it could still be in your future. You could look for an adult dog that is already housebroken and is accustomed to cats - lots of dogs at local shelters or in rescue would fit that description. It may not be in the cards right now, but don't be completely discouraged.

I will leave it up to slvr if she wants a second test or not if she takes him. I can also get him vaccinated before travel if need be.

In the mean time...

Will you PLEASE remove this darn cone of shame?!!!!

Ugh, after everything I went through with Emmy, I'll be double-testing any cat I ever bring in. I just learned my lesson there, y'know? The snap tests are good, but not perfect. And my vet doesn't charge much for them, so why not? In fact... I will probably have Izzy tested again JUST to be sure before I 100% commit to another cat. My work schedule is crazy right now... might have my mom take her in for me. Hahaha, my mom has never put her in a carrier before. That should be fun teaching her how to do that... luckily Izzy doesn't mind the carrier. She'll actually willingly sleep in it if I put it somewhere she likes to be.

I'm moving to Ann Arbor, so about 45 minutes north of the Michigan/Ohio border. Right off of US-23.

I can also send you a check or PayPal some money to cover vaccinations. It's the least I can do if you're actually going to cart him all the way up here.

Karen, probably no dogs for at least the next year. Unless I find an actual rental HOUSE as opposed to an apartment. I'm just not in the position yet to purchase a home, and I don't want to deal with a dog in an apartment.

I'm trying so hard not to fall in love with him and name him until it's confirmed he's healthy and coming home with me... but those pictures are so hard to resist.

Also just thinking how FURIOUS Izzy is going to be with me if I do bring another cat into the house. Emmy was a lover of people, but she always wanted to play rough with Izzy and Izzy was NOT interested. She likes being an 'only child'. I will, of course, work with them like crazy to establish peace. Hopefully this new guy, if he comes home with me, will be a loving little brother as opposed to a child terror. But there's no way to know until he's there, and I WON'T send him away if it doesn't go smoothly.
