Hi,
We have a 14 year old shih-tzu mix dog who we adopted about 4 years ago. His name is Meekos.
He has a large scab on his bellybutton. We took him to our vet today and we got some special cream to put on the scab, and the surrounding area (that is inflammed).
He is not scratching or licking the area.
Could this be something from the inside leaking out?
Our vet said that if the scab didn't fall off, or if it fell off and then came back - that they would biopsy it.
Has anyone had experiences with a scab at the bellybutton on a dog?

Scab at the Bellybutton
Re: Scab at the Bellybutton
Anna, Meekos could have licked at this area unbeknownst to you - also, it could be irritation from some type of flooring (like rubbing across carpet) or perhaps something he layed on outdoors. Do you know for how long the scab has been present? I'm assuming the vet checked other areas on Meekos for similar scabs?
Hopefully it's nothing serious, and hopefully the prescription cream will help but the vet is right to want to look at it again if it doesn't improve. It may be a harmless lipoma that he may have agitated by licking or biting at, and these tend not to need treatment unless bothersome to the dog. Otherwise they can be removed under anesthesia, but if not bothersome, best to leave them alone.

Re: Scab at the Bellybutton
Hi Traci,
Meekos was groomed last week so we can see all areas of his body exept for his tail. There are no other scabs (thank goodness).
We are not sure how long the scab has been there. The groomer found the scab - she accidently pulled off the old scab during the groom. It didn't bleed but the area scabbed over again in a few days.
I'll let you know what happens. Our vet suggested it should fall off and heal in 7 to 10 days. If it doesn't fall off or if it does, and it scabs over again - we will return to our vet.
Thank you,
Anna

Re: Scab at the Bellybutton
Anna, just to rule it out, do you trust the groomer? Sometimes, clippers can cause these type scabs, particularly if the clippers were too hot. Not implying your groomer did this, just want you to know that it DOES happen.
