Ask the vet if he has cyproheptadine (Periactin), it's a veterinary appetite stimulant.

Otherwise, instead of a stimulant, ask the vet for an antiemetic (like reglan, otherwise known as metoclopramide), because if he's not feeling well, chances are he is very nauseous which causes anorexia.

Christy, are you discussing these doses/timing of giving medications with your vet? You're not guessing on doses on your own are you? For example, the cyproheptadine should be a relatively low dose because it acts like an antihistamine, and this can cause either nervousness, excitablility, etc - I'm not saying every cat will have these effects, just saying the dose needs to be proper to help prevent such effects.

In any case, if the dose is low, and he is taking it well and not having any unusual reactions or symptoms from it, hopefully it will help. Just be warned that the appetite medication isn't all that he needs, liver and/or pancreas or biliary conditions require aggressive treatment - your vet should know this, but hopefully Benny will do better before the scheduled ultrasound in NYC.

Again, please ask the vet about a safe antiemetic for cats, even if the appetite stimulant helps him to eat better, there could still be nausea present that really should be treated with an antiemetic.

Hang in there, and update us on Benny and how he's doing, ok?

Hi
well...we are in nyc now..we flew in emergency on tues am..he stopped eating and drinking completely.
My vet was giving me the dosages to give but remember. my vet is in nyc on the phone, there was no vet in mexico to help me..
we arrived and he was yellow he put him on iv with b12 and we did both ultrasound and biopsy. he has triad disease.
he is still in the icu at vet now but hopefully is doing better..for the past 24 hours he has eaten on his own, they tried a new drug for this, i will let you know the name, i do not remember,it is fairly new, it is actually an antiemetic with appetite benefits..
i will keep you updated. he is getting great care now.

The "new" drug could be cerenia, it's formulated for dogs and used off-label for cats (not really new, it's just being used more often for cats now).

I'm glad you were able to get Benny to NYC much earlier, this way he can have constant care, an IV for fluid support, meds can be given in the IV (therefore avoiding oral administration), and I'm thrilled to hear he is eating some on his own, this is excellent news!

Please ask the vet to ensure Benny is getting appropriate pain control, the pancreatitis part of triaditis can be quite painful, so pain medication is crucial. As long as he keeps eating a sufficient amount, benefits from fluid support, and the pancreas is allowed time to heal, then the liver should regenerate fairly quickly - but you may have to be prepared for several days of agressive treatment. HANG IN THERE!

Please keep us updated, give Benny a big hug for me, it sounds like he is such a trooper!

also, i wanted to ask you , will any of these meds cause him to be sleepy?..He is just laying around, he ate 2 small times since i brought him home..I know he has been through a lot..so maybe it is just that.
His gums and skin are still a bit yellow
thanks for all the advice.
