Urgent: nasty neighbor

Post by fynnix »

Help! I need to find a safe but easy solution to keep my cat from going over to my neighbors. one of my dilemmas is that it can't be something that will repel her dog and the other is that i live primarily in the woods. For Gus this is heaven but it makes it very difficult to keep him indoors. i am at a complete loss. if i can't keep him inside (he is very sneaky) i need to at least make sure he will stay away from the neighbors yard. if i don't i will be forced to take him to a shelter which is just breaking my heart at the very thought.

Safe and easy solution? You already know that answer, it is to keep your kitty safely indoors only. Take him to the shelter? Are you reniging on your initial responsibility to the health and welfare and safety of your cat?

Sorry, but heaven is only going to be a safe place when he has been either killed by the neighbor's dog, suffered severe weather elements, suffering from tick diseases, hit by car, the list is endless.

Please be responsible and acclimate him strictly indoors only, this is THE only solution.

Traci, if i was "reniging" on caring for Gus i wouldn't be asking for help. and if you knew him you would understand that keeping him inside isn't as easy as it sounds. however that is my goal. I ask for other ideas as a safeguard. it was never my idea to take him to a shelter but my parents aren't as devoted to him as i am and to them dropping him off is the easy no hassle solution. i am willing to try anything if it means i don't have to give up my best friend. For the past 3-4 months i have been very sick and the thing i looked forward to the most when i got home from the hospital was having him curled up next to purring like a motor boat.

Hi,
Look under Favorites on the menu section on the left side of the boards. Find Debbie's Feline Health. Underth Feline section there are some links on "Indoor Kitties" that may give you some good suggestiion on how to convince Gus to stay inside.
You might also want to ask your parents about a Kitty run (enclosure) that would allow Gus to be outside, but in a bit of a cage that wouldn't allow him to roam. The first link under "Indoor Cats" should cover all areas of ideas, including the cat enclosure and cat trees for your home so he can look outside.
Good luck and let us know how things are progressing, okay?
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

dear fynnix,
Traci knows that you care for your cat very much, and I'm sure she wasn't accusing you of not caring for Gus. But she also understands the dangers of letting cats outdoors.

Truth be told, there is no fence, repellent, etc., that is guaranteed to keep Gus in and the other dog out. But if you're trying to keep him inside and having trouble doing it, perhaps there are things you could do inside your home to prevent Gus from getting out - like installing a second door, so that you can shut the first one before opening the second one to go outside, or diverting him with a toy mouse every time you go out, etc.

I know how much fun it is for kitties to go outside, but truly he's better off staying indoors only. It's in his best interest, and from what it sounds like, it's in yours and your neighbors best interest, too.

Good luck...

I'm not trying to sound cruel or heartless here, I am being frank, open and honest because I've seen it before. I work in emergency situations where I try to save lives from the exact dangers I listed above. Sometimes, I have no control over the situation, and a pet's demise is truly hard to endure when it could have been prevented in the first place.

I am assuming this is YOUR cat, so don't expect your parents to take over the responsibility. I don't know how old you are, so at this point, I assume your parents allowed you to have a kitty under the pretense of trusting you to take responsibility for his care. This also involves a safe, indoor lifestyle.

Please do check out the links Debbie provided for you, and know that there are many things you can do to divert his attentions to things indoors. It's not hard to acclimate him indoors only, I have 11 cats who have acclimated just fine, it simply takes committment and dedication to your kitty. He will be safer, happier, and probably live much longer being indoors.
