a friend of ours in Utah lost their older cat, Bugsy, yesterday afternoon (HBC, and my hubby gently suggested to her that we keep our cats indoor only for a reason just like that), and later that evening, a friend of hers brought her a kitten....an adorable little black fluffball that her 2 little boys named Rascal...
tonight she heard a noise, found Rascal under a dresser with mucus coming from his mouth and totally disoriented....before she could even get moving to get to a vet, he died in her arms...
no plants in the house...a single mom with 2 little boys, so basically kidproofed as well, as far as chemicals and meds go....but I did suggest that she get down to kitten level and look for ANYTHING it might have found, even under and behind furniture that the bigger cat was not able to get to...even if her older cat did not find it to be of any interest, something may have been too much for a kitten to resist....
or maybe it had a seizure or some other physical issue that she was not aware of...in the one picture she posted of him, his eyes look a bit glazed/watery even then, it was taken last evening when they first got him.
She had planned on a vet trip tomorrow for initial visit and never even got that far...
Sleep well little Rascal...and Bugsy
Rascal & Bugsy
I'm so sorry, what a double-tragedy
She should call whomever she adopted kitten from, and make sure no other kittens from the same place might be sick, and if so, those kittens demand vet visits. If a shelter, that call should be mandatory, as many shelters come down with illnesses and don't bother to inform anyone.

Re: Rascal & Bugsy
good idea Traci....I did not even think to mention to her to let the person who gave her the kitten know about its death so they can follow up if necessary. I will be talking to her tonight so will let her know
Re: Rascal & Bugsy
How sad. To lose an older cat is a terrible loss, but to lose the young one so soon is just tragic. It's taken me all of about 2 minutes to fall in love with all my new puppies, and I'm sure it's the same with a new kitten. My deepest condolences to your friend.
