Cat is sluggish and not eating. Please help

Post by cw871 »

My approximately 3 year old spayed female cat has been acting very sluggish the past couple days. She'll mope around the house, pick a spot, and just sit there. She has no energy at all. She just sits and stares at the ground. She also looks to be having trouble breathing. She's not eating, but she's drinking a little. I took her to the vet and he found nothing physically wrong with her. When the blood test results came in, he said everything came back normal. We have no idea what it could be. It seems like it could be poisoning, but the blood tests results would have shown that. I would greatly appreciate any help with this!

Thank you,

Chase

A cat not eating is possibly (and likely) a serious sign of something physically wrong, and things will only get worse if the cat does not get proper medical care. Please find another vet and take her for a complete work up..ASAP!! How many days has it been since she has not eaten? It doesn't take long for liver disease to set in if they don't eat and once it has it is even more difficult to treat. You must find a vet who will be willing to explore this further, because this is not normal behavior for a healthy cat. Good luck, and please keep us posted!

Get to a new, more experienced vet NOW.

What blood tests exactly where done? I would strongly suggest a COMPLETE blood profile (this includes a CBC with differential as well as the chemical profile).

Urinalysis: Should be done in every workup. Many infections and blockages are missed because the vet didn't, or the client declined, a urinalysis.

Xrays: When bloodwork is unremarkable, and in your kitty's case, particularly with breathing distress, xrays are important to evaluate the lungs and heart. Do not undermine this importance!

To a lesser extent: Is it too hot in your home? Are you suffering a heat wave in your area? Heat stroke can be a real concern for your pets (although the vet should have noticed any signs, particularly dehydration and high internal body temperature).

Either way, get kitty to a more experienced vet NOW.

I took my cat to urgent care and unfortunately she had an infection that had progressed too far. To give her the best quality of life we had to put her down. I truly appreciate your guys' help anyways in this matter.

I'm very sorry.

Did they say what kind of infection?

Thank you. They didn't know, she got an infection and it caused fluid build-up in her lungs.

I am so very sorry that this didn't have a happy ending. May her journey be a safe and gentle one. I know all too well the loss of a beloved furbaby

3 years old is pretty young to have developed something so serious.

Did you allow her outdoors? If so, please, in the future, keep all future cats INDOORS ONLY.

Was it due to an injury, virus, fungal disease?

My thoughts and prayers for sweet kitty, what a tragedy.

Thank you. We just aren't sure. It was an infection that progressed rapidly over a few days. And yes, we let all of our cats go outside for a little while everyday.
