Dolly

Post by Wanda »

Some of you will remember me, I'm one of those that hop in and out,but think lots of you all. As far as I know Dolly isn't dead yet. She was acting weird would run around in circles when I was cleaning her litter box act like sometimes she didn't know me, continually trying to get outside and therein lies the problem she got out we don't know exactly when except around 9am Sunday and we haven't seen her since. She is so beautiful I'm afraid she has been stolen, we have had happen for dogs in area, or she is dead. She has been my Baby Doll ever since she was bout 4 days old, now nearly 10years, you all know my pain.

Oh Wanda, please don't give up!!!

Print a good picture of her that shows her face and body, coloring, etc, and print flyers with the picture of her - place flyers in your neighborhood for about a 4-6 block radius - check nearby vet clinics (and ask them if you can post a flyer on their lobby bulletin board), because if she is injured, someone might take her to a vet clinic for help and treatment, post the flyers in nearby supermarkets, etc.

Check your local rescue organizations, as well as all of your local animal shelters. DO NOT rely strictly on phone conversations with these orgs and shelters, your description of Dolly and their description will differ tremendously! Physically visit the orgs and shelters at least every other day, every day if you can, and leave a flyer with each of them. Post an ad in as many local well-read newspapers as you can, these are usually free and you can usually keep putting your ad in every three days. Also post a LOST ad on Craigslist for your area, complete with Dolly's photo and keep updating it as necessary.

Ask neighbors to keep an eye out for her and instruct them to call you at once if they've sighted her. Ask them also to check their garages, sheds and any outbuildings on their properties because more often than not, a cat can get trapped in someone's garage or shed and they won't know for days. Asking them to look helps!

If you can search personally, start with at least a 2-3 block radius in your neighborhood. Call out to her, take a can of cat food and fork and tap the can with the fork as you call out to her. Stop and listen for any meows.

Leave out a dish of food and water by your back door (or front door if she's familiar with it). Leave something nearby the food/water dish with yours or her scent on it, like a sock or t-shirt so she can catch the scent in the air. Leave a porch light on at night in case she is hiding nearby.

She very well could be hiding nearby under a neighbor's deck, porch, shed, woodpile, any place there is shelter from the weather elements. Cats seek small dark places to hide, and try to avoid areas of noise and people when they are scared, and may venture out at dusk or late night in search of food/water. If you can, search for her during very early mornings and late evenings or even later when it is quiet and little traffic so she can better hear you calling out to her.

DON'T GIVE UP! Many many times, cats are in fact, hiding very nearby, and just too scared to venture back to their house. Search mornings and nights, as often as you can, keep calling out to her and looking in places a cat is likely to hide and feel safe. Again, ask your neighbors to look on their properties, sheds, garages etc. The sooner you search agressively, the chances are better at finding her sooner.

Dolly is in my prayers for a safe return, please do your best at any and all of the above tips and don't give up! Sometimes, cats go missing for days, or even months, and then come home! Your diligence in searching for her increases her chances of getting home!

Still no Dolly :( :( :( Thanks for the replies and prayers. Tracie we live in the south, farm country closest town 10 miles away, no stores. We have 18 acres. I have checked all the sheds and everywhere she would hide if she got away from me, I have done this every morning and evening and sometimes during the day. It's over 90 degrees here and she couldn't stand to be hot. We have had 2 dogs poisoned and neighbor has had one, I guess people got tried of them coming round but they could have called they didn't have to kill them, of course we don't know who although we have our ideas, been rumored they keep pans of antifreeze out. Thanks for the ideas and encouragement, I am about ready to give up. I hadn't thought to call her vet, but someone might would take her there or even the other vet in town . I will get a picture to them. She had gotten out a few days before this but when I was gonna look next morning she ran in the back door, the funny way she was acting would that be signs of poisioning? I just thought it was her age and really thought nothing of it.

Wanda - I'm so sorry you've lost your baby. Please know that all of us are hoping she returns safely. Sending lots of good wishes your way.

I don't know really know cats that well, but it sounds like she might have been stressed over something. Could have been something inside or outside (the scent of a wild animal or stray dog). Has anything changed in your household or around the house that might have upset her? Renovations, workmen in the house, fight with the kids, wild animals nearby, etc? Maybe an unusual scent on you (had you visited with friends and maybe smelled of their animal, or since you live on a farm, new horse or livestock?)

Dolly (my Baby Doll) has passed. Son called his daddy this morning that he had found her this morning, I guess looking before going to work, they won't tell me much just that he found her and she wasn't ran over or no animals had hurt her just went to sleep. I hope I didn't let her down someway. Hubby is going to bury her for me. I am heartbroken, but I had nearly 10 years with my beautiful baby, I am blessed.

Sorry Dolly is gone, but agree it's better she was found. She may have "known something" and that was why she got out... this often happens with cats. I know you must go thru your grieving process, but please don't continue thinking it might have been your fault, OK? It definitely wasn't. BTW: I do remember you very well, Wanda. Hope things are going well in other parts of your life and that the tornadoes weren't close to you.
