Re: ovaries and tumors
The only thing I know about ovarian cancer, is that in humans it's VERY, VERY serious, and usually rapidly fatal without chemotherapy. Over the past few years, the survival rate with extensive chemotherapy has gone from under 10% to about 30%. (The chemotherapy is so severe that a woman must be hospitalized, and the risk of death from the procedure itself is high).
However, I don't want to be a harbinger of doom - a tumor is an overgrowth of cells, not necessarily cancerous, although "highly vascular", I think, usually is I hope your friend finds out this isn't cancer and the dog recovers completely. Sending my best wishes.

Re: ovaries and tumors
Do you know how old the dog is, and was she used for breeding?
The vet will probably send it off for pathology to determine if further treatment is necessary, but it might be that the emergency spay is all that is needed at this point. Impossible to say until the vet gets inside and sees the problem and if it's progressed.

Re: ovaries and tumors
Well, it's certainly unusual for a young dog to develop ovarian cancer, but associations might include previous infection with pyometra, ovarian cysts, cystic hyperplasia, and what is called a *beep*-cord tumor, which seems to be the most common form of ovarian tumors in dogs.
I would recommend radiographs every three months from this point onward to monitor for changes, metastic rate if any, and of course, the pathology will tell the vet more about the type, treatment if necessary, and expected prognosis. The immediate concern is the exploratory surgery done at this point, recovery may be a bit slow due to the nature of the surgery and invasiveness, but she has an excellent chance of recovery post-op. Have to wait for the pathology to comment further.

Re: ovaries and tumors
oh my gosh you guys, thanx so much for the answers evidantly after a 3 hour surgery, a 13 pound growth was removed from the ovary, with a slightly small liver that now will regenerate as all the blood supply was going to this growth that he said was a malformation in the uterous as she was developing as a pup, at first thought maybe a cryporchid, (both *beep*) but found no evidance of male anything, it is female 100% and that she had a bit of thickening of the colon, wich the vein supplying this mass was huge, he said that she is ok, and recouping well, pink gums and tongue and that she should be fine and it is just a fluke, nothing genetic, and that she will be ok to visit tomorrow at noon, hopefully, my goodness, this is a good friend and i dont know what she would do without her little girl, thank you again guys, you dont know how much you mean to me! when i need you guys you are here.
Re: ovaries and tumors
hi guys, just an update, it was the fallopian tube wrapped around everything, nothing genetic, he said it was a malformation in the womb.
this pup is making a miraculous recovery and doing fantastic so far.
she hopes to take her home or to her vet on monday for further observation and recovery.
had they waited hours or up to a day, and not discovered it, it would have burst and she would have died.
how horrible to think about, esp with the children loving her so much.
the good lord above is watching over her.

Oh my goodness! What a story!
I'm really sorry they had to go through this, but thank goodness it isn't cancer. Sending all my wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
