What a Weekend
What a Weekend
Well, as we always do, when hubby went to go bowling Sunday night, he pounded on the hood of the car...honked the horn...backed out slow...honking and stopping every few feet
He pulled onto the highway and felt and heard bumping and thumping under the car
I had stayed home and was in process of putting cat food out for the cats
All of a sudden he drove back up honking the horn...he got out and handed me this little black bundle and told me what happened and that when he turned around it was laying on the side of the road...but it was alive and alert
Got it into the bathroom...called the emergency vet to get it up there...I figured it had internal injuries because I had blood on my hands...just a little smear and the only place I could find any trace of blood was from its rectum
Got to the ER with him...the vet examined him, with my help since no one else was there.....no internal bleeding...no broken bones...eyes were bright and clear...the rectal bleeding was from a prolapsed rectum caused by excessive diahhrea and he said the skin around there was not recently injured, but looked like it was going on for a couple weeks now...hence the small amounts of bloo...but he did have a dislocated right elbow (Shoulder area?)
left him overnight and they sedated him next morning for a more thorough exam...and neutering since they found nothing else with him....he also got dewormed and they said he has passed "tons of roundworms"...he will go back in 2 weeks for a follow up and redose of deworming meds...
I went to pick him up this afternoon, dreading having to put him back outside knowing he could not get along...but could not be in here with our others safely...
I suddenly thought of a friend who recently divorced and is now living alone...this little guy has the HUGE golden totally round eyes and has had alot happen in his life...so I called her....she got permission from her landlord...I stopped at the local store and got kitten food and litter and went to the vet and got a few soda flat boxes to use for litterbox for it until its leg heals...
By the time I left her place, it had eaten and drank some and investigated the litterbox and bathroom...limping with that right front leg...and was settled down between the dryer and wall watching us...
I did not get pictures, but I am sure Amy will over time
I am just glad he is okay and I found him a forever home!

Re: What a Weekend
My goodness!! What a story. So glad everthing turned out alright and this little one has a good home. Any idea how old he is?

Re: What a Weekend
We figured judging from his size and teeth to be between 5-6 months of age
I am glad that hubby, nor any other cars, actually hit him...he had somehow gotten up INTO the engine area and fell back out when the car turned the corner and accelerated on the highway...so thankfully he just got a good tumbling...and the front leg dislocation
I have seriously considered saving $$$ to build a 2-sided house for them...with a good sized attached (divided) yard with a fence on top even so nothing can get in or out...and dividing the guys from the gals until I can afford to get them all neutered/spayed....so no more kittens happen...and to keep them safe from harm!!

Re: What a Weekend
Tambrey- such a beautiful ending...can't wait to see the pics and know his new name. That is so good.
Re: What a Weekend
Tambrey, is your friend capable of caring for this kitten's injuries? (i.e, restricted rest, did the vet even attempt to splint the elbow? Was an xray even taken?)
About the prolapse, did he give you a treatment plan? (i.e., ky-jelly to keep area moist and clean, antibiotics, monitor for additional prolapse which would require ER and possible surgery) Did the vet suggest specific diet?
Both injuries require lots of monitorization and care, and both are probably keeping this little guy in a painful state, did the vet prescribe mild pain medication for at least a few days?

Re: What a Weekend
Yes, she will take good care of him...she is an animal person and she will be with him alot...until the leg is better, and he knows his way around her home, she is keeping him in the bathroom/laundry room
He was on pain meds at the vet, but did not have any sent home...X-rays were not done that night, because one was not available...they use the one at the chiropractor across the street...they will usually do it under sedation, stabalize the pet to a surgical board and go over there for a full body x-ray and close-ups of suspected areas...they do reset the machine for the animal's size...so I am sure hoping they did this while he was under the next day
There was no splinting involved at this point in time, but I am going to see her tonight and suggest that if by tomorrow he is still being cautious with it, to take him back and see about splinting and maybe pain meds for a few days to keep him calm/relaxed/vegging at home...I will pay for it right now, as I will the 2-week follow up appointment.
It was not a badly or barely visible prolapse, more of a puckering (no redness, just the slight bulge) and general irritation from loose stools/worms...but he called it prolapsed all the same...they treated it there and actually when I picked him up Tuesday afternoon, I did not notice it at all and when I asked about his bowel movements the tech said they were normal consistency and he did not strain, just very wormy...but I will suggest the K-Y to her and to keep an eye on it through his second deworming...
I do plan on following up alot with her these next few weeks, until I know he is fine and comfortable there...

Re: What a Weekend
After all this time, and the vet STILL doesn't have an xray machine.
Plus, one does NOT sedate pets for xrays unless there is a serious condition warranting it (which in itself is rare). What if a pet had liver or kidney disease undetected, and the vet sedated the pet?

Re: What a Weekend
They do bloodwork before sedation, and the owner signs to have that done...or a waiver if they choose not to for whatever reason...which would be dumb in my opinion
Re: What a Weekend
Which is still wrong, because they are charging for bloodwork, sedation, for an xray that requires neither! (unless an emergency case - trauma for example, necessitates an xray and LIGHT sedation is necessary for a fractious pet in which to obtain an xray) - all other MINOR procedures DO NOT require bloodwork nor sedation for an xray!
It doesn't matter what they do between the clinics, it is wrong, and if the health department finds out, both clinics are going to be in a world of trouble.

Re: What a Weekend
Seems a bit weird to me. Like Traci, I'm pretty sure using the Chiropractor's equipment is in violation of health codes. At best, it's probably unethical. I personally wouldn't care if I had an xray and was placed on the same table that an animal had been on, but a lot of people would be very upset by it. I suppose I'm very spoiled with my vet. They have state-of-the-art xray, lab, and ultrasound equipment.
