Little things, like making sure you're the first one out the door, not the dogs, puts you as the leader in their eyes. Also (and I love doing this one to people who have dogs who don't believe it works) if you stand in front of an object in contention -- in this case, the gate or fence where they're having their confrontations -- and don't let them near it, then that is now YOUR gate. Don't make eye contact, don't flap your arms or make any noises. Just simply stand in front of it and don't let them past you. Stay calm and firm and they'll back away. Really. Try it.

Had a friend just last week whose dog was terrorizing one of their cats. So, while I was there, I claimed the cat as "mine" by standing in front of her and not letting the dog near her. The owners were AMAZED by the dog's response. She tried running around me a few times, but I blocked her, and she eventually went elsewhere and laid down, totally calm instead of crazed by the cat's presence. Now they know how to do it as well, and the dog doesn't bother the cat anymore. It's so simple.

HUGE change in Callie!! I took everyone's advice about reminding both dogs who's boss. I researched online and applied some of Cesar Millan's techniques. I separated my dogs and started with Callie. I put her on a leash and made her be completely calm and submissive before I gave her any attention. I guess I've just gotten lazy and forgot what an unbelievably smart dog she is. It took all of 5 minutes for her to be able to lay on the floor-head and all-and not respond at all to my friend's dog, Maddie. I kept her on the leash and didn't let her make a move without permission. I even made her lay back down just to tell her to get up again. She did AWESOME!!!!!She stayed down on her side and I let Maddie come up and investigate. Callie glanced at her for a split second and that was it. Lots of extra scratches and praise for Callie! This morning was the same way. I let Maddie outside first and when I brought her in and let my dogs out, I let them have an interaction. Both of my dogs wagged and sniffed for about 2 seconds and out they went. No signs of aggression at all. Roxy is calmer too. It seems that she follows Callie's lead. I know that my work is not finished just because of one positive encounter but it is definitely a big step in the right direction. I'm so proud of my girls!! I was very afraid that I would have to euthanize Callie because I couldn't risk her hurting anyone and couldn't imagine anyone wanting an aggressive, 5 year old dog. She's been an awesome friend and I felt like I owed her more than that. Thank you sssooo much for the tips, advice and pep talks.

I couldn't agree more!! I appreciate the advice and support from everyone so much!! It doesn't matter how insignificant the question, you all are always ready to help at the drop of a hat. It is such a comfort knowing that when I don't like the answer I get from my vet or want an opinion on cat litter, I can always come here. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I secretly love Cesar, but I know a lot of people feel very strongly about him one way or another, so I tend to lay low with that opinion.)
