New kitten

Post by pour_me »

I just adopted a 10wk old kitten from the animal shelter saturday, they gave her all her shots and spayed her on monday. I brought her home tuesday. She is not playing at all and not eating. I was trying to feed her dry kitten food. Today I got her some Iams moist kitten food, which she ate about a teaspoon of at about 1:30 this afternoon. Is this normal for a kitten? I have never owned a cat before. Thank you.

Slight vaccine reactions do occur but they generally do not persist past 24 hours, so I strongly suggest you get her back to your vet IMMEDIATELY for a recheck. Don't wait on this please, her decrease in appetite is concerning, especially 4 days later. You also need to determine that she isn't suffering a severe infection at her spay incision site, this can definately worsen if not detected and treated ASAP. Go NOW please.

From what I understand of what you've said, that does not sound normal at all and in fact could be a major health concern. Not eating for several days can be very bad for kittens (and adult cats). Please call your vet as soon as you can and ask if you can have her seen tomorrow.

You need to get her to eat something, tonight - try putting some tuna out for her, or pour tuna juice onto her IAMS canned food - ? Tuna is pretty smelly and hopefully will stimulate her to eat. You also need to be monitoring her water intake - if she's not drinking, she could dehydrate very quickly and that is deadly.

Good luck and please do call your vet; tell him/her that she was just spayed (if it wasn't done at your vets), and be as specific as possible when you talk to him/her, about what and how much she is eating and how much she has had to drink.

Please keep us posted!
