I was thinking yesterday that, although I know this magazine is geared toward people who love their dogs, if it inspires just one person to take a look at that pathetic stray, wouldn't that be great? Mr. Blue, of course, thinks he deserves a whole ton of treats for the honor

My husband says we're going to have to start calling him "Dr. Blue." Since he "failed" his first heartworm test, we always congratulate him for "passing" his yearly one. So according to my hubby, he's passed all his tests and is now published

He's still my goofy puppy, though!

Back to the subject on copyright.....Mary, I agree with Karen on that one. If it was YOUR original story, you still, to some degree, own that right, you simply gave permission to the editors to use your story in print in their publication. I would think you are free to keep your own copyright on your story and feel free to reference it anywhere you like.

Also, when quoting from any reference, I believe one can quote or reference approximately the first 100 words of an article/publication as long as direct reference is made to the author/publication.

Your problem is simplified by the fact that this is not an article they paid money for. You have realeased the letter to them for one time publication, but because you were not paid you retain all rights of ownership, therefore you can post the letter here.

I thought you had a full paid article. ......

It gives a good feeling to know an inspiring story is going out into the world... IMO a published message of this kind does help others, in and of itself... and people will remember and pass it on to folks who may find themselves in a similar situation. To me there has always been something magical about Mr. Blue... his coloring and markings, and the way he found his "family"... Good for you for writing it out and pasising this fine story along.

As to copyrights... I once knew the basic rules, but that was before the Internet and my becoming prone to 'senior moments' about anything in the least complex. In fact, a former sis inlaw, at my request, emailed some pertinent info on this to me just a couple years ago... don't know if it is in my cluttered Bookmarks stash, though... However, I seriously doubt if there would be any danger in copying a personal article of this type... You might email it to friends and they could forward... I would like very much to have a copy myself!
