Re: slvrwhispr's furkids!
Me, hubby, and roommate were playing board games this evening. Emmy was right in the middle of it "helping" everyone (trying to walk off with the Scrabble tile bag). Izzy was sleeping behind my head on the couch as I was sitting on the floor.
Things are nice.

SIGH.
Well. The good news is, if the cats have access to the balcony all night long, they won't jump off to their doom/freedom.
The bad news is, apparently one or both of them has figured out how to open the very heavy sliding glass door, and now I need to get the lock fixed. Or use a dowel rod in the track. Probably do that 'cause it's easier. Off to Home Depot with me...
HOW DID THEY OPEN THAT DOOR??? Furry little ninjas... gave me a heart attack when I saw them outside...

If it's not properly fitted in the frame/jam, it will be loose and able to be moved with the slightest opening motion.
A dowel or broom handle is fine, just make sure it fits the full length of the side you intend to place it, with 1/2 inch of clearance so you can get it in and out of the threshold.
Ideally, get a deadbolt lock for it, since you need to increase the security of the door.

Well, it's a second-story apartment on a hill with a LONG way to the ground, so I've never been concerned before about security. And I PREVIOUSLY thought the door was too heavy for the felines to move it. Apparently... I was wrong.
Anyway, it's fixed now. I wish I had a camera set up or something so I could have seen how they figured that one out. I know I shut it securely last night because if I don't, the slightest breeze rattles my bedroom door, and I'm an EXTREMELY light sleeper. So I'm pretty observant about that being shut when it's time for sleep. I'm honestly convinced the cats are ninjas.
Emmy showed me she knows what doorknobs do about a week ago... she heard someone coming up the outside stairs and jumped at the knob to open the door. Luckily she lacks the necessary thumbs to properly operate the door. Note to self: Never purchase or allow the installation of lever-style door handles. The cats KNOW.

Re: slvrwhispr's furkids!
they usually ake footbolt locks for sliding glass doors as well....what is the brand of door?...I know Pella has specific ones for their doors (I work in the service department)...so IF it is a Pella SGD....contact your local Pella store and see about getting one...or corporate and they will put you in touch with your local service center.slvrwhispr wrote:SIGH.

Re: slvrwhispr's furkids!
SW- you won't believe this...on America's Fav. Videos they just showed a cat who jumped up on a table that was beside a glass sliding door and actually pushed it open with it's paw using the handle of the door...boy these cats r smart.
Re: slvrwhispr's furkids!
Slvr, My K2 tries to open the lever handles too, he is really good with them but doesn't possess enough force downward to get them open.
I still watch him though, and you should watch Emmy too, we don't know if they're actually going to get them open one day

Whew...I bet that was a relief silver!! Sneaky cats! I remember catching Willow learning to push the lever that opened the screen door on our screened porch in Florida...after that we had to keep it locked because she actually got it opened one day!

Hubby looks about 14 in this picture.
I thought it was funny; Emmy was sleeping behind his head, Izzy was sleeping behind my head. Apparently they like being ear muffs.
Everyone appears to be adjusting nicely. Izzy spent the first couple of days at an occasional distance, but now she's back for snuggles and people-time. Emmy loves wrestling the laces on Daddy's boots. I keep wanting to get a picture but never have the camera handy. It's pretty funny.

I love that picture!
