Dry kitty skin...

Maybe some of you have this problem now that winter is here - you and your pets.

How can I help Angel with her dry skin. She always has "normal" flakes, but now that the furnace is running her skin is dryer. She eats Iams dry and Newmans canned organic turkey. I have thought of buying some Salmon Oil, but hate to fool with her diet too much as she has food allergies. If I give her a little veg. oil once in a while would that help? I figure that is probably what is in those expensive supplements. Or plain yogurt. IE am debating about whether her dry skin can be helped thru diet or externally. I am brushing her more figuring that will stimulate her skin to produce oils. I used to give Honey a Salmon Oil supplement and that really helped her skin.

I also have some "Allergy Relief" from Petsmart that is supposed to have moisturizers, but am hesitant to use that too much. The vet says her dry skin is cause of winter heat.

If she isn't itchy and scratching, then don't do, or use anything. It's temporary and generally is not bothersome. No, no vegetable oil.

Fatty acid supplements can be used, but discuss them with your vet. All marketed supplements are not equal. Same for topicals (creams, lotions, sprays), I would never recommend any topical applications unless directed by your vet for a very specific skin affliction, and only a product on the vet's recommendation (OTC pet products are laden with unnecessary ingredients, sometimes toxic like tea-tree-oil, citrus extracts, other oils etc).
