Well...we are slowly finding good forever homes for the feral cts, which we have fervently been working on handling and taming....
We currently have been "working" with Thing1 and Thing2...inseparable brothers...hhmmm...maybe I should take Thing1 into the vet for company now that I am typing this....
Anyways...about 3 or so weeks ago, thing2 got swatted by Mom and had a small scratch on his hip...looked to heal fine...a about 10 days ago, he was limping a bit, I looked and saw nothing...3 or 4 days ago, he was a bit feverish so I took him in...by now having forgotten about the scratch from a few weeks ago...his eye was weepy and breathing a bit raspy and feverish, so he got Amoxil twice daily...and I got some Science Diet canned kitten food for him to eat because he just wanted to sleep in a blankie on the porch...it is still warm enough out....
Suddenly yesterday...the abcess appeared.....a HUGE one, almost golf ball sized just overnight, right on his hip, where the scratch had been weeks ago....at least he has already been on antibiotics....
I got him in this morning and they will open and drain it and keep him there at least until Wednesday given the location and fact that he is an outside cat and I CANNOT have any more inside, no matter HOW badly I want to....this is why I am thinking maybe take Thing1 in for company....I'll stop by this afternoon and see how he is doing....how Thing1 is doing at home...and what the vet thinks....

I called and he is still groggy. They had to lance it open to drain. Of course no stitches just a bandage so it can drain. And antibiotic shot as well.
What sucks is I cannot visit him tomorrow because I work all day. I"l go before work on Wed then bring him home that afternoon

He is home and doing great!!
Thing1 was very happy to see him and Thing2 was very happy to see ME....I was in a rush getting home from work so did not even stop to get the carrier...he rode on my lap most of the way home....either there or on his back getting a belly rub on the seat beside me.....purring and squirming all over....
The wound is no longer draining and starting to heal shut, which the vet said was fine....it is looking good...just continue with the antibiotics until they are gone....
And continue looking for a good forever indoor home for them!!
In the meantime, this weekend will see their winter home getting set up....it is an old truck topper that we pile hay/straw and old blankets into it in piles, making sure it is thick around the edges, and a few tunneling/hallway areas so they can have separate "rooms" if they prefer.....then we pile full bails around the outside and on top of it...leaving the back of the topper propped up with buckets at either side so it cannot accidentally fall down, so that is open for them to come and go
We then flap an old blanket over that as well to help keep any winds and snow from blowing into it...
We set this up underneath the white pine trees, on the south side of them and to the north of the house, with the open end facing south east so the winds don't blow into it...
With the back end up, we can also place food dishes along that outer edge and they can come and eat without actually having to leave the shelter...
We do have the water dishes on the front porch, not far away, only because of the electricity needed to keep them heated and warmed....

Good to hear he is doing well. Keep a close watch on the area and his symptoms, you want to make sure the anbitiobics are working, even after the course is finished you'll want to keep an additional eye on the wound and symptoms. As you know, kittens tend to get URI's from each other so you want to rule out the possibility of a URI unrelated to the wound. Watch your other cats too, you don't want this spreading!

Thanks Traci and momPaws....I am definitely keeping an eye on the others....especially Thing1 since they sleep together and everything....
our neighbor has been "losing" cats, and this does concern me...they told us the other day they have come out to find 1 and sometimes 2 of theirs dead
and they have no idea why...on the occassion theirs will come over to visit, but for the most part, my "ferals" tend to stay here and theirs stay there....
I am thinking and afraid that the guys are doing alot of work at the grainery across the street and have possibly put down rat poison and their cats that they try to take care of have eaten those mice/rats that ate the poison, since it is literally across the street from their house...
It is really quite strange that the two sets of cats tend to stay separate from each other, and I am glad if there is an illness going around!!....I know my "regulars" and they stay around my yard and maybe the nearby field...and as I said, once in a while I see one of theirs venture over, probably when one of the females here is in heat...but "my" toms usually run them back off again!!
But anyways.....Thing2 is happy to be home and was eating well tonight with the rest of them....and sleeping back on his blankie on the porch....I'll just make sure the wound area stays clean, wipe it as needed until it has healed over and keep an eye for any weepiness from it...
