My little Huey, who has the heart murmur, had a BUN of 31 on this last blood test. The week before it was 35 - they rechecked it. All other blood test results were normal. He's on lasix, enalapril, and theophylline for the murmur. The vet told me the high end of normal was 27 so 31 isn't really that high. Should I change anything in his diet? Should I be concerned? I've been doing research on the net and most places say a BUN that low really isn't anything to be concerned about....yet. Any thoughts from you folks? Thanks,
Vicki
Slightly elevated BUN in 12 year old Pomeranian....
Re: Slightly elevated BUN in 12 year old Pomeranian....
The high BUN alone probably isn't too significant, unless it is consistently high on repeat bloodwork, and/or unless other enzymes are altered as well.
Most likely dehydration. Although, you might want to re-evaluate Huey's heart function, since decreased flow (or poor circulation) of blood to the kidneys can also increase the BUN. Less commonly, a urinary tract problem such as obstruction could also increase the BUN. Was a urinalysis done as well? The urinalysis is very valuable to detect certain markers in the urine for kidney issues, liver issues, diabetes, etc.
No, probably not necessary to change the diet, do monitor his drinking habits though as well as his urine output. If you didn't have a urinalysis done with the bloodwork, ask the vet if he feels it might be warranted.
