I got me five little basement kittens

Post by Auntie Debbie »

Introducing the Basement Kittens (take off of the black/white cat thing on Icanhazcheeszburger-basement cat/ceiling cat):
While at Petco trying to find a good forever home for Ziggy, a woman came in saying she had a bunch of kittens under her porch. The one rescue group woman went back to the woman’s house with her and and came back with 5 little black kittens. They weigh a little over one pound, have teeth and still have fairly blue eyes. I’d say they’re about 4 ½ weeks. Ziggy was adopted so I could take them and take them I did. Once I got them home and got the room set up and ousted Nanceen, I bottle fed them, then put them by some formula watered down kitten wet food. They each bottle fed and then dove into the goop on the floor. One even ate some of the dry. I’m guessing someone in the neighborhood had been putting out food and they’ve been indulging. Now if I can just get them acclimated to using the litter box!
Since they’re all black it will take me some time to figure out who is who. A couple do have some white on their chests so that should help!

I fostered four little black kittens like that once. All solid black. I got four little collars in different colors to tell them apart.

You never stop, Debbie!

They are so precious! I use the ears, nose, tail and size to tell the difference. Sometimes, black cats also have just a few white hairs to differentiate.

I think you're going to have a couple of black tabbies, at least that's how it looks in the pics.

I like the collar idea to a point....,they will be growing and active..just don't want the collars to get too tight or for them to get hung up someplace. There are at least two with little splotches of white on their chests. I'll start with that for now. I'm just glad they're friendly and fairly weaned. Looks like at least one has figured out the litter box.

I read some place years ago that all black cats are tabby-striped underneath... don't know if that's current info or not  Anyhow, in pic #2 methinks I see a trace of Burmese?

Don't know what breed(s) they are, LOL! However, all "black" cats are indeed tabbies and ironically enough, not really black....more of a brown, often with red tints. If you look at their fur in direct sunlight, you will see the brown/red.
I'm just hoping that in a couple of weeks, their markings will be more pronounced.

Debbie

Remember Cody? As a baby, he was black with only white paws.

As he matured, he turned into a beautiful black tabby tuxedo with cream coloring in various areas.

The little ones are doing very well. One has been using the litter box; just wish they all would :( They are THE MOST affectionate little scamps you'd ever want to meet! All five were cuddled up next to me when I woke up and once they realized I was awake we had a little Purr Fest. They are very playful and just plain sweet. Even Nanceen's last crew wasn't this affectionate....but then again they took to the litter right away, LOL!
Traci, yes it does look like a couple will have some sort of Tabby marking, just too early to tell for sure. WildFire sure had some promise to be a stunner. I was really looking forward to seeing how her markings would be, especially if I could have gotten her new owners to send me some pics of my little girl all growed up. Too bad that was not to be.

OHHHH MYYYY GOD!!! I'm a sucker for black cats!!! I have 3 from kittenhood and even though they are different ages, I can tell them apart by shape and eye color (and the white bikini bottoms the two girls sport helps as well). My boy Max is solid black and silky. Even in the sunlight he is blacker than black is black. Keeks has a bit of brown to her in the sunlight and Mitzi has a bit of grey. But in low light or the dark, they all look the same.

Ohhh boy congrats and good luck with this crew!
