Bladder stone surgery

Post by Debo »

OK..finally gave in and Cheech had surgery yesterday to have bladder stone removed. He was home today at 11 am and it is now 4 pm. He is eating and drinking already, just a little drowsy. Had to be catherized this am before leaving animal hospital and bladder was emptied. However since he has been home just 5 hours he has squatted in his litter box 9 times to pee but no pee. Called vet and vet on duty said dont worry unless he still has not peed this evening. Is this right...help

Did he urinate on his own at the hospital? Generally, these cats are not released until there is evidence the urine was produced on their own (NOT by manual expression). If urine was collected before he was released, was it tested to ensure no blood, high pH, crystals in the sediment, etc?

It isn't unusual for catheterization to cause irritation and inflammation, this should pass soon enough, but the fact that he continues to go to the box and not produce should be further evaluated by your vet. What medications did the vet send home with you? Were antibiotics prescribed? Did the vet mention the possibility for a short course of antiinflammatory meds?

Call him back and express your concerns, make sure you tell him the number of repeated attempts in the litterbox, and if he is licking excessively (in which case, you should use an e-collar at least temporarily), if seems to be in pain, etc.

545pm Cheech just peed two drops. Doctor sent him home with baytril and liquid pain meds. I am very uncomfortable that this surgery, unknown to us was done by a vet that we do not know at all. We have been going to a vet hospital with several vets but have always had one doctor for surgery. (The owner), He lead us to believe that he would perform the surgery and then when I picked him up this am, the technician told me the surgery was performed by a vet we have never seen with far less experience than our regular vet. Neither vet was there to talk to this morning upon release. Pretty crappy, huh. I am livid

Personally, yes, it's pretty crappy to release a surgery patient without the vet discussing with you and discussing meds and followup care. I wouldn't have left the building without having first talked to the vet who did the surgery.

In any event, call the clinic and express your concerns about the frequent litterbox trips. Granted he's got pain meds and antibiotics, but you do need to hear from the vet who did the surgery and who was SUPPOSED to release him with instructions to you this morning.
