I haven't been on in a long time.
Mom calls me the other day saying that she is out and had to get kitty litter box. I was like huh? She said that there was a cat in the yard and she fed him due to weather. They live in Maine and when you find human/animal out there you tend to bring them in and keep them fed during the winter months. Mom has never had a cat around by her before and they aren't in the city part. This is real country we are talking about where the big grocery store is 30minutes away and the small town ma/pa is down the rud as we call it.
Well she fed it and the next day she called it and he walked right into the house, planted his butt onto Nana's bed and has been there since walking about like he was born and raised there.
I naturally had my concerns of rabies and dad was concerned with mom immune system being poor.(Crohn's disease). She got the litter pan and he used it right away and even asks to go potty when the door is shut. They are going to be putting the box inside the house not on the terrace.
Mom called the police and vet's office to say she found a kitty and gave her details just in case. This kitty is too well groomed and to well aware of being in home to not be an inside cat. She calls him and he meows to her. She leaves room he follows her and snuggles. OMG what a funny thing i can hear in her voice, it's like having a new grandbaby to her i swear.
she calls him cat for now because she says she tried several names and he comes to allof them. She will keep him until someone calls for him and if they dont by next week she will bring him to vet for a check up and tests and shots.
My concern is, what if he has already had shots? Testing i'm ok with, that's just blood work. But what about giving him shots he might have already had? If she tests his titer that will cost just as much as giving the shot it self. Will it hurt him to get more shots OR if she keeps him inside only and he has no diseases can she wait to give him shots?
I do believe that since mom hasn't been around a kitty since 1996 that having him there and if he is found by owner that she might get one. They dont have any animals at all. Newfoundland was put down many years ago in 2003 so it's been a while for animals in that house.
i am wondering if she keeps him if she shouldn't just call him Garfield LOL
Just thought you'd all to hear about the cat who knew everything.

A stray found my mom...
Almost 7 years in remission from Graves disease and no meds!
You should never rely on titers, they are not specific enough.
Get him to a vet and at least vaccinate for rabies and an FVRCP (distemper).
I would get the rabies vaccination done one week, the FVRCP the following week (7 days apart), this way, if he recently had a vaccination, at least he has a week in between to recoup. I'd also advise asking the vet to keep kitty in clinic for a couple hours to monitor for vaccine reactions, each time.

Thank you Traci, mom is taking kitty today as no one has claimed him yet. Calling her right now to make sure she knows what to do.
